TLDR
A number of methods for obtaining semen from the fowl have been described, including mating a cock to a hen and immediately securing the fluid from the cloaca of the hen.

Sperm Competition Selects Beyond Relative Testes Size in Birds

TL;DR: A strong link between testis histology and sperm length is found, suggesting selection on testis architecture through selection on sperm size, and that species under intense sperm competition had a greater proportion of sperm-producing tissue within their testes, supporting the prediction that sperm competition fosters adaptations in reproductive organs that extend beyond testes size.
Journal ArticleDOI

Effect of cryopreservation on sperm parameters, lipid peroxidation and antioxidant enzymes activity in fowl semen.

TL;DR: The present study showed that the activity of CAT, GPx and SOD in chicken semen was affected by cryopreservation, what increased the intensity of lipid peroxidation (LPO).
Journal ArticleDOI

A comparison of critical osmolality and hydraulic conductivity and its activation energy in fowl and bull spermatozoa.

TL;DR: Water permeability, or hydraulic conductivity, of the plasma membrane and its activation energy for each species is computed and the relevance of these findings to cryopreservation of spermatozoa is considered.
Journal ArticleDOI

Effect of the female reproductive tract on sperm metabolism in the rabbit and fowl

TL;DR: It was shown that these rapidly respiring spermatozoa were capacitated because they fertilized 18 % of the eggs tested as compared to no eggs fertilized by freshly ejacu¬ lated spermatozosa.
Journal ArticleDOI

The effect of dietary selenium source and level on the uptake of selenium by developing chick embryos

TL;DR: It was concluded that Se source and dietary inclusion level influenced the Se concentration of portions of developing embryonated eggs and that embryonic Se concentration changed during incubation.

A Method of Obtaining Spermatozoa from the Domestic Fowl

W. H. Burrows, +1 more
- 01 Jul 1935 -
TL;DR: The method presented in this paper consists of a manual elicitation of an ejaculatory response which is undoubtedly reflex in nature and can be obtained in a short period of time.
Journal ArticleDOI

Selective Fertilization in Fowls

L. C. Dunn
- 01 Jun 1927 -
TL;DR: An attempt was made to find out whether there was any selective preference in the union of sperm and egg cells in poultry, and it was found that self-fertilization was more effective or easier to make than cross fertilization.

The Influence of Certain Feeds Upon the Production of Spermatozoa by the Domestic Chicken

TL;DR: Experimental studies pertaining to the factors which may influence fertility in poultry have been limited to hatchability thus far, and for obvious reasons such studies have been confined to the female.
Journal ArticleDOI

A study of the spermatozoon of the fowl, with particular reference to osmiophilic bodies in the sperm head

TL;DR: The purpose of this study was to learn something of the nature of the bead‐like bodies which occur in the head of the sperm of the fowl since it was found in a previous study that they are apparently affected in a characteristic manner by vitamin E deficiency.
