TLDR
A user interface is that portion of an interactive computer system that communicates with the user as mentioned in this paper. User interfaces include any aspect of the system that is visible to the user, such as a keyboard, mouse, or display.
Abstract
A user interface is that portion of an interactive computer system that communicates with the user. Design of the user interface includes any aspect of the system that is visible to the user. Once, all computer users were specialists in computing, and interfaces consisted of jumper wires in patch boards, punched cards (q.v.) prepared offline, and batch printouts. Today a wide range of nonspecialists use computers, and keyboards, mice, and graphical displays are the most common interface hardware. The user interface is becoming a larger and larger portion of the software in a computer system--and a more important portion, as broader groups of people use computers. As computers become more powerful, the critical bottleneck in applying computer-based systems to solve problems is more often in the user interface rather than in the computer hardware or software.

Modifying virtual object display properties

TL;DR: In this paper, a display may be provided and configured to present a virtual field-of-view having multiple virtual objects superimposed on a real-world scene, and a priority of a region of the multiple regions may be based on one or more realworld objects identified in the region.

Systems, Devices and Methods for Dynamically Providing User Interface Controls at a Touch-Sensitive Secondary Display.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present a method for detecting a swipe gesture on a touch-sensitive secondary display (TSSD) that is distinct from the primary display by displaying a first user interface for an application and then displaying affordances corresponding to a first portion of the application.

Method and apparatus for controls based on concurrent gestures

Robin Hayes
TL;DR: In this article, a number of parallel gestures are detected, in a particular area on a touch screen interface of a device, and a command is identified based at least on the parallel gestures and an action associated with the command is performed.

Capacitive touch panels

TL;DR: In this article, a novel method and apparatus for performing the method is disclosed, which comprises a laser (17), at least one ink jet print head (14), means for holding a transparent substrate having a transparent conductive layer, means (22) for adjusting the relative positions of the laser and the ink jet head to the transparent conducting layer and a controller to control the laser.

Flick move gesture in user interface

TL;DR: In this article, a dual-display communication device is used for navigation through display objects, and the method and device are directed to navigation, by a dual display communication device, through the display objects.

Direct Manipulation: A Step Beyond Programming Languages

TL;DR: As I talked with enthusiasts and examined the systems they used, I began to develop a model of the features that produced such delight, and the central ideas seemed to be visibility of the object of interest; rapid, reversible, incremental actions; and replacement of complex command language syntax by direct manipulation of the objects of interest.

Direct manipulation interfaces

TL;DR: A cognitive account of both the advantages and disadvantages of direct manipulation interfaces is sought and two underlying phenomena that give rise to the feeling of directness of manipulation are identified.
