TLDR
A user interface is that portion of an interactive computer system that communicates with the user as mentioned in this paper. User interfaces include any aspect of the system that is visible to the user, such as a keyboard, mouse, or display.
Abstract
A user interface is that portion of an interactive computer system that communicates with the user. Design of the user interface includes any aspect of the system that is visible to the user. Once, all computer users were specialists in computing, and interfaces consisted of jumper wires in patch boards, punched cards (q.v.) prepared offline, and batch printouts. Today a wide range of nonspecialists use computers, and keyboards, mice, and graphical displays are the most common interface hardware. The user interface is becoming a larger and larger portion of the software in a computer system--and a more important portion, as broader groups of people use computers. As computers become more powerful, the critical bottleneck in applying computer-based systems to solve problems is more often in the user interface rather than in the computer hardware or software.

Content consumption and notification in a network

TL;DR: In this paper, a data analyzer engine can be configured to receive feedback indicating different content currently consumed by subscribers in a cable network environment and produce a content guide to include multiple selectable channels from which content is available for retrieval over a shared communication link.

Using the Z-axis in user interfaces for head mountable displays

TL;DR: In this article, a hand-movement input device associated with the computing device can receive a first input indicative of a gesture toward the display plane and a second input indicating a gesture away from the display planes.

Efficient word encoding for recurrent neural network language models

TL;DR: In this paper, the first similarity between a representation of the user input and a first acoustic model of a plurality of acoustic models was determined, and the second similarity was determined based on the first and second similarity.

Displaying and manipulating virtual objects on virtual surfaces

TL;DR: In this paper, a computerized method of providing an interactive virtual surface to display virtual objects is described, where the virtual surface displays at least one axis and a plurality of virtual objects.

Direct Manipulation: A Step Beyond Programming Languages

TL;DR: As I talked with enthusiasts and examined the systems they used, I began to develop a model of the features that produced such delight, and the central ideas seemed to be visibility of the object of interest; rapid, reversible, incremental actions; and replacement of complex command language syntax by direct manipulation of the objects of interest.

Direct manipulation interfaces

TL;DR: A cognitive account of both the advantages and disadvantages of direct manipulation interfaces is sought and two underlying phenomena that give rise to the feeling of directness of manipulation are identified.
