TLDR
A user interface is that portion of an interactive computer system that communicates with the user as mentioned in this paper. User interfaces include any aspect of the system that is visible to the user, such as a keyboard, mouse, or display.Abstract:
A user interface is that portion of an interactive computer system that communicates with the user. Design of the user interface includes any aspect of the system that is visible to the user. Once, all computer users were specialists in computing, and interfaces consisted of jumper wires in patch boards, punched cards (q.v.) prepared offline, and batch printouts. Today a wide range of nonspecialists use computers, and keyboards, mice, and graphical displays are the most common interface hardware. The user interface is becoming a larger and larger portion of the software in a computer system--and a more important portion, as broader groups of people use computers. As computers become more powerful, the critical bottleneck in applying computer-based systems to solve problems is more often in the user interface rather than in the computer hardware or software.read more

Gesture guide system and a method for controlling a computer system by a gesture
TL;DR: In this article, a gesture guide system and a method for controlling a computer system by a gesture are presented, where the system includes a sensor element and a computer, and the method includes steps of communicating the sensor element with the computer system, showing at least one gesture option and corresponding function instruction, detecting a gesture of the user, and executing the corresponding function instructions in response to the detected gesture.

Context-aware augmented reality object commands
TL;DR: In this paper, a user interface on an augmented reality computing device comprising a see-through display system is described, where a user input selecting an object in a field of view of the display system, determining a first group of commands currently operable based on one or more of an identification of the selected object and a state of the object is presented to the user.

Direct Manipulation: A Step Beyond Programming Languages
TL;DR: As I talked with enthusiasts and examined the systems they used, I began to develop a model of the features that produced such delight, and the central ideas seemed to be visibility of the object of interest; rapid, reversible, incremental actions; and replacement of complex command language syntax by direct manipulation of the objects of interest.

Direct manipulation interfaces
TL;DR: A cognitive account of both the advantages and disadvantages of direct manipulation interfaces is sought and two underlying phenomena that give rise to the feeling of directness of manipulation are identified.
