TLDR
A user interface is that portion of an interactive computer system that communicates with the user as mentioned in this paper. User interfaces include any aspect of the system that is visible to the user, such as a keyboard, mouse, or display.Abstract:
A user interface is that portion of an interactive computer system that communicates with the user. Design of the user interface includes any aspect of the system that is visible to the user. Once, all computer users were specialists in computing, and interfaces consisted of jumper wires in patch boards, punched cards (q.v.) prepared offline, and batch printouts. Today a wide range of nonspecialists use computers, and keyboards, mice, and graphical displays are the most common interface hardware. The user interface is becoming a larger and larger portion of the software in a computer system--and a more important portion, as broader groups of people use computers. As computers become more powerful, the critical bottleneck in applying computer-based systems to solve problems is more often in the user interface rather than in the computer hardware or software.read more

System and method for converting gestures into digital graffiti
TL;DR: In this article, a method for converting gestures undergone by a device into digital graffiti is described, based on an orientation of the device and a path traversed by the device, which is then superimposed onto a digital canvas.

Speech recognition involving a mobile device
Melvyn J. Hunt,John Bridle +1 more
TL;DR: In this article, a system and method of speech recognition involving a mobile device is described, where a set of phonetic symbols are converted to speech input and data relating to the symbols is transferred from the mobile device over a communications network to a remote processing device, where it is used to identify at least one matching data item.

User interface for loyalty accounts and private label accounts for a wearable device
TL;DR: In this article, the use of loyalty accounts, private label payment accounts, and general payment accounts using a wearable electronic device with an electronic wallet is discussed, where the electronic device may be used to provide loyalty account information and payment account information to a payment terminal, such as an NFC-enabled payment terminal.

Direct Manipulation: A Step Beyond Programming Languages
TL;DR: As I talked with enthusiasts and examined the systems they used, I began to develop a model of the features that produced such delight, and the central ideas seemed to be visibility of the object of interest; rapid, reversible, incremental actions; and replacement of complex command language syntax by direct manipulation of the objects of interest.

Direct manipulation interfaces
TL;DR: A cognitive account of both the advantages and disadvantages of direct manipulation interfaces is sought and two underlying phenomena that give rise to the feeling of directness of manipulation are identified.
