TLDR
A user interface is that portion of an interactive computer system that communicates with the user as mentioned in this paper. User interfaces include any aspect of the system that is visible to the user, such as a keyboard, mouse, or display.
Abstract
A user interface is that portion of an interactive computer system that communicates with the user. Design of the user interface includes any aspect of the system that is visible to the user. Once, all computer users were specialists in computing, and interfaces consisted of jumper wires in patch boards, punched cards (q.v.) prepared offline, and batch printouts. Today a wide range of nonspecialists use computers, and keyboards, mice, and graphical displays are the most common interface hardware. The user interface is becoming a larger and larger portion of the software in a computer system--and a more important portion, as broader groups of people use computers. As computers become more powerful, the critical bottleneck in applying computer-based systems to solve problems is more often in the user interface rather than in the computer hardware or software.

Methods and systems for a linear character selection display interface for ambiguous text input

TL;DR: In this paper, a linear character selection display for entering an alphanumeric string is presented, which includes presentation logic for displaying on a presentation device an alphabet arranged into a row of letters and indication logic for presenting visual cues grouping a series of letters of the row into clusters.

Distributed system for cache defeat detection and caching of content addressed by identifiers intended to defeat cache

TL;DR: In this paper, a cache defeat detection system and methods for caching of content addressed by identifiers intended to defeat cache are further disclosed, which includes a system for optimizing resources in a mobile network, by for example performing one or more of, identifying a parameter in an identifier used in multiple polling requests to a given content source; means for, detecting that the parameter in the identifier changes for each of the polling requests; determining whether responses received from the given content sources are the same for each voting requests; and/or caching the responses on the mobile device in response to determining that the

Electronic device and method for gesture-based function control

TL;DR: In this article, a gesture-based function control for an electronic device having a touch-based input interface such as a touch screen is provided, where a selected mode is activated in response to a user's request through a special function key or a multi-touch interaction.

Direct Manipulation: A Step Beyond Programming Languages

TL;DR: As I talked with enthusiasts and examined the systems they used, I began to develop a model of the features that produced such delight, and the central ideas seemed to be visibility of the object of interest; rapid, reversible, incremental actions; and replacement of complex command language syntax by direct manipulation of the objects of interest.

Direct manipulation interfaces

TL;DR: A cognitive account of both the advantages and disadvantages of direct manipulation interfaces is sought and two underlying phenomena that give rise to the feeling of directness of manipulation are identified.
