TLDR
A user interface is that portion of an interactive computer system that communicates with the user as mentioned in this paper. User interfaces include any aspect of the system that is visible to the user, such as a keyboard, mouse, or display.Abstract:
A user interface is that portion of an interactive computer system that communicates with the user. Design of the user interface includes any aspect of the system that is visible to the user. Once, all computer users were specialists in computing, and interfaces consisted of jumper wires in patch boards, punched cards (q.v.) prepared offline, and batch printouts. Today a wide range of nonspecialists use computers, and keyboards, mice, and graphical displays are the most common interface hardware. The user interface is becoming a larger and larger portion of the software in a computer system--and a more important portion, as broader groups of people use computers. As computers become more powerful, the critical bottleneck in applying computer-based systems to solve problems is more often in the user interface rather than in the computer hardware or software.read more

List scrolling and document translation, scaling, and rotation on a touch-screen display
TL;DR: In this article, a computer-implemented method for use in conjunction with a device with a touch screen display is disclosed, in which a movement of an object on or near the touch-screen display is detected.

Portable electronic device with multi-touch input
TL;DR: In this article, a portable communication device with multi-touch input detects one or more multitouch contacts and motions and performs one-touch operations on an object based on the contacts and/or motions, such that the object has a resolution that is less than a pre-determined threshold when the operation is performed on the object, and the object's resolution is greater than the threshold at other times.

Devices, Methods, and Graphical User Interfaces for Accessibility Using a Touch-Sensitive Surface
TL;DR: In this paper, an accessibility method is performed by an electronic device with a display and a touch-sensitive surface, in response to detecting a first user interface navigation gesture by a finger on the touch sensitive surface, navigating in the plurality of user interface elements in accordance with a current navigable unit type.

Mobile terminal and method of controlling the same
TL;DR: In this article, a mobile terminal can display a movement of an icon being displayed on the displayed wallpapers and preview screens, allowing the user to intuitively recognize a location of the icon and effectively move the icon.

Direct Manipulation: A Step Beyond Programming Languages
TL;DR: As I talked with enthusiasts and examined the systems they used, I began to develop a model of the features that produced such delight, and the central ideas seemed to be visibility of the object of interest; rapid, reversible, incremental actions; and replacement of complex command language syntax by direct manipulation of the objects of interest.

Direct manipulation interfaces
TL;DR: A cognitive account of both the advantages and disadvantages of direct manipulation interfaces is sought and two underlying phenomena that give rise to the feeling of directness of manipulation are identified.
