TLDR
A user interface is that portion of an interactive computer system that communicates with the user as mentioned in this paper. User interfaces include any aspect of the system that is visible to the user, such as a keyboard, mouse, or display.Abstract:
A user interface is that portion of an interactive computer system that communicates with the user. Design of the user interface includes any aspect of the system that is visible to the user. Once, all computer users were specialists in computing, and interfaces consisted of jumper wires in patch boards, punched cards (q.v.) prepared offline, and batch printouts. Today a wide range of nonspecialists use computers, and keyboards, mice, and graphical displays are the most common interface hardware. The user interface is becoming a larger and larger portion of the software in a computer system--and a more important portion, as broader groups of people use computers. As computers become more powerful, the critical bottleneck in applying computer-based systems to solve problems is more often in the user interface rather than in the computer hardware or software.read more

Authenticated device used to unlock another device
TL;DR: In this paper, an electronic device having a user interface locked state and a user-interface unlocked state may be in the locked state, and an external device may detect, via wireless communication, an external devices; receive, from the external device, unlocking information for unlocking the electronic device; in response to the received unlocking information, and/or a determination that the external devices is authorized, the locked electronic device may unlock and enter a normal operating state wherein application programs may be launched and used.

Display apparatus and method of controlling the same
Tae-Dong Lee,Ki-Ho Kim +1 more
TL;DR: In this paper, a display apparatus and a method of controlling the same is presented, which includes a signal processing unit which processes an image signal, a display unit which displays an image thereon corresponding to the processed image signal; a communication unit which communicates with a server which stores a plurality of application programs; and a controller which requests information about the plurality of applications from the server, determines whether the application programs can be properly performed in the display apparatus based on the information received corresponding to request, and controls the communication unit to receive only at least one application program that can be performed

Direct Manipulation: A Step Beyond Programming Languages
TL;DR: As I talked with enthusiasts and examined the systems they used, I began to develop a model of the features that produced such delight, and the central ideas seemed to be visibility of the object of interest; rapid, reversible, incremental actions; and replacement of complex command language syntax by direct manipulation of the objects of interest.

Direct manipulation interfaces
TL;DR: A cognitive account of both the advantages and disadvantages of direct manipulation interfaces is sought and two underlying phenomena that give rise to the feeling of directness of manipulation are identified.
