Hepatitis B and hepatitis D virus infections in the Central African Republic, twenty-five years after a fulminant hepatitis outbreak, indicate continuing spread in asymptomatic young adults.
Narcisse P Komas,Sumantra Ghosh,Mariama Abdou-Chekaraou,Mariama Abdou-Chekaraou,Pierre Pradat,Pierre Pradat,Nasser Al Hawajri,Alexandre Manirakiza,Gina Laure Laghoe,Claudine Bekondi,Ségolène Brichler,Jean-Omer Ouavéné,Abdoulaye Sépou,Brice Martial Yambiyo,Jean Chrysostome Gody,Valentin Fikouma,Athenaïs Gerber,Natali Abeywickrama Samarakoon,Dulce Alfaiate,Caroline Scholtes,Caroline Scholtes,Nora Martel,Frédéric Le Gal,Hugo Lo Pinto,Ikram Amri,Olivier Hantz,David Durantel,Jean-Louis Lesbordes,Emmanuel Gordien,Philippe Merle,Philippe Merle,Tudor Drugan,Christian Trepo,Christian Trepo,Fabien Zoulim,Fabien Zoulim,Jean-Claude Cortay,Alan Kay,Paul Dény,Paul Dény +39 more
TL;DR: The findings indicate a high prevalence of previous and current HBV-E and HDV-1 infections both in the mid-eighties fulminant hepatitis outbreak and among asymptomatic young adults in 2010, and reinforce the need for universal HBV vaccination and the prevention of HDV transmission among HBsAg-positive patients through blood or sexual routes.

Journal ArticleDOI
Characterization of hepatitis B virus surface antigen variability and impact on HBs antigen clearance under nucleos(t)ide analogue therapy.
Aurélie Velay,Hélène Jeulin,Marine Eschlimann,Brice Malve,François Goehringer,M. Bensenane,Jean-Pol Frippiat,Priya Abraham,Ashrafali M. Ismail,John M. Murray,Christophe Combet,Fabien Zoulim,J. P. Bronowicki,Evelyne Schvoerer +13 more
TL;DR: Molecular features in patients showingHBsAg persistence on NUCs argue in favour of a different aa pattern in the HBV S gene compared to those showing HBsAg clearance, and in nonresolvers, a decrease in HBs ‘a’ determinant antigenicity and more frequent mutations in the S gene suggest a role for theHBV envelope characteristics in HBSAg persistence.

TL;DR: The VariScreen algorithm performed well in patients with chronic liver disease of any etiology or severity-it is the only test that safely rules out VNTs and can be used in clinical practice.
