Association of DC-SIGN Promoter Polymorphism with Increased Risk for Parenteral, but Not Mucosal, Acquisition of Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type 1 Infection
Maureen P. Martin,Michael M. Lederman,Holli B. Hutcheson,James J. Goedert,George W. Nelson,Yvette van Kooyk,Roger Detels,Susan Buchbinder,Keith Hoots,David Vlahov,Stephen J. O'Brien,Mary Carrington +11 more
TL;DR: Individuals at risk for parenterally acquired infection who had −336C were more susceptible to infection than were persons with −336T (odds ratio = 1.87, P = 0.001), and a potential role for DC-SIGN specific to systemic acquisition and dissemination of infection is suggested.
Journal ArticleDOI
Genomic Microsatellites as Evolutionary Chronometers: A Test in Wild Cats
Carlos A. Driscoll,Marilyn Menotti-Raymond,George W. Nelson,David Goldstein,Stephen J. O'Brien +4 more
TL;DR: Assessment of patterns of genomic diversity for ninety feline microsatellite loci among previously characterized populations of cheetahs, lions and pumas in recapitulating demographic history implies that the micros Satellite diversity measures offer proportionate indicators of historic population bottlenecks and founder effects.
Journal ArticleDOI
Correlates of Protective Cellular Immunity Revealed by Analysis of Population-Level Immune Escape Pathways in HIV-1
Jonathan M. Carlson,Chanson J. Brumme,Eric Martin,Jennifer Listgarten,Mark A. Brockman,Mark A. Brockman,Anh Q. Le,Celia K. S. Chui,Laura A. Cotton,David J.H.F. Knapp,Sharon A. Riddler,Richard Haubrich,George W. Nelson,Nico Pfeifer,Charles E. DeZiel,David Heckerman,Richard Apps,Mary Carrington,Simon Mallal,Simon Mallal,P. Richard Harrigan,Mina John,Mina John,Zabrina L. Brumme,Zabrina L. Brumme +24 more
TL;DR: The authors analyzed 2,100 HLA-associated HIV-1 subtype B polymorphisms in 1,888 treatment-naive, chronically infected individuals using phylogenetically informed methods and identified characteristics of HLAassociated immune pressures that differentiate protective and non-protective alleles.
Journal ArticleDOI
Non-muscle myosin heavy chain 9 gene MYH9 associations in African Americans with clinically diagnosed type 2 diabetes mellitus-associated ESRD
Barry I. Freedman,Pamela J. Hicks,Meredith A. Bostrom,Mary E. Comeau,Jasmin Divers,Anthony J. Bleyer,Jeffrey B. Kopp,Cheryl A. Winkler,George W. Nelson,Carl D. Langefeld,Donald W. Bowden +10 more
TL;DR: It is likely that a subset of African Americans with T2DM and coincident nephropathy have primary MYH9-related kidney disease (e.g. FSGS or global glomerulosclerosis), although renal biopsy studies need to be performed.
Journal ArticleDOI
Genetic interplay between HLA-C and MIR148A in HIV control and Crohn disease
Smita Kulkarni,Ying Qi,Colm O'hUigin,Florencia Pereyra,Veron Ramsuran,Paul J. McLaren,Jacques Fellay,George W. Nelson,Haoyan Chen,Haoyan Chen,Wilson Liao,Sara Bass,Richard Apps,Xiaojiang Gao,Yuko Yuki,Alexandra Lied,Anuradha Ganesan,Peter W. Hunt,Steven G. Deeks,Steven M. Wolinsky,Bruce D. Walker,Mary Carrington +21 more
TL;DR: It is demonstrated that a MIR148A insertion/deletion polymorphism associates with its own expression levels, affecting the extent to which HLA-C is down-regulated, the level of HIV control, and the risk of Crohn disease only among those carrying an intact miR-148a binding site in the HLA -C 3′UTR.
