TL;DR: To search for sequence variants conferring risk of nonmedullary thyroid cancer, analysis on 22 SNPs with a P < 5 × 10−8 in a genome-wide association study on levels of thyroid stimulating hormone in 27,758 Icelanders focused on rs965513, a region previously reported to contain an uncorrelated variant conferringrisk of thyroid cancer.

TL;DR: This work demonstrates that the 10 low-penetrance variants in papillary thyroid cancer have the potential to be applied in medicine to improve individualized cancer risk assessment, and builds polygenic risk score models based on a small number of common germline variants that emphasize the importance of heritable low- penetrance markers in PTC.
