Aggregation-Induced Emission: Together We Shine, United We Soar!

Luminogenic materials with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) attributes have attracted much interest since the debut of the AIE concept in 2001. In this critical review, recent progress in the area of AIE research is summarized. Typical examples of AIE systems are discussed, from which their structure–property relationships are derived. Through mechanistic decipherment of the photophysical processes, structural design strategies for generating new AIE luminogens are developed. Technological, especially optoelectronic and biological, applications of the AIE systems are exemplified to illustrate how the novel AIE effect can be utilized for high-tech innovations (183 references).

Azo-dye alignment for displays and photonics

The low–temperature poly–Si oxide (LTPO) backplane is realized by monolithically integrating low–temperature poly–Si (LTPS) and amorphous oxide semiconductor (AOS) thin–film transistors (TFTs) in the same display backplane. The LTPO–enabled dynamic refreshing rate can significantly reduce the display’s power consumption. However, the essential hydrogenation of LTPS would seriously deteriorate AOS TFTs by increasing the population of channel defects and carriers. Hydrogen (H) diffusion barriers were comparatively investigated to reduce the H content in amorphous indium–gallium–zinc oxide (a–IGZO). Moreover, the intrinsic H–resistance of a–IGZO was impressively enhanced by plasma treatments, such as fluorine and nitrous oxide. Enabled by the suppressed H conflict, a novel AOS/LTPS integration structure was tested by directly stacking the H–resistant a–IGZO on poly–Si TFT, dubbed metal–oxide–on–Si (MOOS). The noticeably shrunken layout footprint could support much higher resolution and pixel density for next–generation displays, especially AR and VR displays. Compared to the conventional LTPO circuits, the more compact MOOS circuits exhibited similar characteristics.

Compact Integration of Hydrogen–Resistant a–InGaZnO and Poly–Si Thin–Film Transistors

A review on novel photonic-aligning technology, the physics and its application in LC devices is briefly discussed. An introduction to the physical mechanisms of the photo-aligning and photo-patterning technology is given. The characterization of LC-surface interaction, such as pretilt angle and azimuthal anchoring energy is also discussed. Photo-aligning of ferroelectric LC has been described.

New developments in photo-aligning technologies: physics and applications

A field sequential color (FSC) LCD is made using the no-bias bend (NBB) mode. This NBB mode is made possible using a nano-structured alignment layer which is capable of producing any pretilt angles. This NBB pi-cell has a total response time less than 1.3ms which is needed for FSC.

The structure and interaction of small molecular clusters have been the subject of extensive studies. Molecular beam electric resonance spectroscopy [1], Fourier-transform microwave spectroscopy [2] and pressure induced infrared absorption spectra [3] have provided information concerning the ground state structure and the intermolecular potential energy surface for a large number of binary systems. Recently, vibrational predissociation experiments using molecular beam techniques and tunable infrared lasers have measured the infrared absorption spectra and dynamical properties of many van der Waals and hydrogen bonded clusters.
