Aggregation-Induced Emission: Together We Shine, United We Soar!

Luminogenic materials with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) attributes have attracted much interest since the debut of the AIE concept in 2001. In this critical review, recent progress in the area of AIE research is summarized. Typical examples of AIE systems are discussed, from which their structure–property relationships are derived. Through mechanistic decipherment of the photophysical processes, structural design strategies for generating new AIE luminogens are developed. Technological, especially optoelectronic and biological, applications of the AIE systems are exemplified to illustrate how the novel AIE effect can be utilized for high-tech innovations (183 references).

Light-Emitting Liquid Crystal Displays Based on an Aggregation-Induced Emission Luminogen

Separate fast and slow components were observed in the electrical response to optical excitation of an Y‐Ba‐Cu‐O thin film prepared by laser deposition. The temperature dependence of these two components indicated different thermal and nonthermal behavior. The speed of the nonthermal component is limited by the 6 ns laser pulse duration used in the excitation. It was also demonstrated that thin films that were optically semitransparent were crucial in the observation of the fast nonthermal response.

Nonthermal optical response of Y‐Ba‐Cu‐O thin films

Y‐Ba‐Cu‐O thin films have been grown on silicon at a substrate temperature of 400 °C by plasma‐assisted laser deposition technique. These films were superconducting in an as‐deposited state. Films deposited directly on silicon and films with a MgO buffer layer differed in their superconducting properties. Films with a MgO layer showed higher critical temperatures (70 K) and higher critical currents (3×103 A/cm2 at 31 K) than films deposited directly on Si. Depth profiling by Auger and x‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy has been employed to study the diffusion and structural variation near the interface.

As‐deposited Y‐Ba‐Cu‐O superconducting films on silicon at 400 °C

We present results of a fast-response no-bias-bend (NBB) liquid crystal display, made possible by using a nanostructured alignment layer. Such alignment layers allow high pretilt angles of over 45° to be fabricated reliably. Thus, a stable bend configuration pi-cell can be achieved without applying any bias voltage to the cell. This NBB cell has a total on-off response time of less than 1.8ms and is faster than the corresponding optically compensated bend cell with a low pretilt angle.

Fast-response no-bias-bend liquid crystal displays using nanostructured surfaces

Liquid crystal photo‐alignment using azo‐dyes is reviewed. This alignment method is very different from previously reported ones, such as photo‐crosslinking, photo degradation and photo‐isomerization. It will be shown that this photo‐aligning method can provide a controllable pretilt angle and strong anchoring energy of the liquid crystal cell, as well as high thermal and UV stability. The application of this method to the alignment and fabrication of various types of liquid crystal displays is also discussed.
