Aggregation-Induced Emission: Together We Shine, United We Soar!

Luminogenic materials with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) attributes have attracted much interest since the debut of the AIE concept in 2001. In this critical review, recent progress in the area of AIE research is summarized. Typical examples of AIE systems are discussed, from which their structure–property relationships are derived. Through mechanistic decipherment of the photophysical processes, structural design strategies for generating new AIE luminogens are developed. Technological, especially optoelectronic and biological, applications of the AIE systems are exemplified to illustrate how the novel AIE effect can be utilized for high-tech innovations (183 references).

Stochastic Processes in Physics and Chemistry

We reported a synthesis of an ultrathin FeS2 thin film via thermal sulfurization of an iron thin film and its fabrication process for field-effect transistors. Reaction time was found to be essential for the growth of the crystallized FeS2 thin film. The thickness of Fe increased from 10 nm to 35 nm after the reaction. The FeS2 thin film has a resistivity of 0.345 Ω cm and a Hall mobility of 7.1 cm2 V−1 s−1, with a carrier concentration of 2.89 × 1018 cm−3. The fabricated FeS2 transistors have a reported highest current on/off ratio of 3.94 × 104 and Ion of 0.117 mA. Moreover, the FeS2 based transistor not only broader the applications of pyrite, but also provides a platform for investigation of FeS2 materials. Temperature-dependent electrical transport measurements confirmed the rich intrinsic defect states in the FeS2 thin film, which indicates that reducing intrinsic defect might be the key issue to further improve the device performance.

Synthesis, characterization and fabrication of ultrathin iron pyrite (FeS2) thin films and field-effect transistors

High mobility, low temperature polycrystalline silicon thin film transistors (poly-Si TFTs) potentially enable the integration of driver circuits and pixel transistors on the same glass panel for large area displays. Solid phase crystallized TFTs (SPC-TFTs) have been studied extensively at processing temperatures of about 600/spl deg/C. However, due to the presence of a large density of intra- and inter-granular traps, SPC-TFTs suffer from poor device performance, such as high threshold voltage, high leakage current and early kink effect. Metal-induced lateral crystallization (MILC) at 500/spl deg/C is an alternative technology for realization of TFTs. Due to the presence of large longitudinal grains and lower trap densities, these devices exhibit better performance than SPC-TFTs. With self-aligned deposition of the crystallization inducing metal, it is discovered that the behaviour of conventional MILC-TFTs is strongly influenced by the overlapping of the drain metallurgical junction and the MIC/MILC interface, which consists of a grain boundary and trapped metallic impurities. Detrimental effects of this overlap can be eliminated by separating the interface from the junction. In this work, the performance of SPC- and MILC-TFTs are compared, particularly with regard to scalability and the onset of the kink effect.

A Low‐Cost Nano‐modified Substrate Integrating both Internal and External Light Extractors for Enhancing Light Out‐Coupling in Organic Light‐Emitting Diodes

o Direct deposition of indium tin oxide (ITO) thin film on color filters is of practical use in the fabrication of state-of-the-art flat-panel displays. Room -tem perature dc m agnetron sputtering of thin-film ITO and issues related to the integration of ITO-on-glass panels containing m icro-fabricated color filters and other functional m aterials have been investigated. The resulting polycrystalline ITO exhibited good adhesion to the underlying color filters, as well as good optical transparency and high electrical conductivity. A pplication of this ITO deposition technology to color liq uid-crystal and organic light-em itting diode displays will also presented.
