Smoke on the water: Can riverine fish populations recover following a catastrophic fire‐related sediment slug?

TL;DR: In early 2003, a series of large, wildfire-related sediment slugs occurred in streams in the south-eastern Australian alpine region as mentioned in this paper, and the results suggest that actions such as translocation may be required to ensure the long-term survival of threatened species.
Journal ArticleDOI

Severe consequences of habitat fragmentation on genetic diversity of an endangered Australian freshwater fish: A call for assisted gene flow

TL;DR: It is found that most remaining populations of Macquarie perch have low genetic diversity, and effective population sizes below the threshold required to retain adaptive potential, but regular small‐scale translocations will rapidly rescue populations from inbreeding depression and increase adaptive potential through genetic restoration.
Journal ArticleDOI

Global COVID-19 lockdown highlights humans as both threats and custodians of the environment.

Amanda E. Bates, +346 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors report immediate impacts of changes in human activities on wildlife and environmental threats during the early lockdown months of 2020, based on 877 qualitative reports and 332 quantitative assessments from 89 different studies.
Journal ArticleDOI

Observations on the distribution and abundance of carp and native fish, and their responses to a habitat restoration trial in the Murray River, Australia

TL;DR: Three separate studies undertaken on the Murray River between Yarrawonga and Tocumwal are presented on the relationship between carp (Cyprinus carpio), native species, and LWD to examine whether native species and carp compete for LWD habitat, suggesting it is unlikely that carp and native species are directly competing for L WD habitat.
