Journal ArticleDOI
Continental-scale animal tracking reveals functional movement classes across marine taxa.
Stephanie Brodie,Stephanie Brodie,Elodie J. I. Lédée,Elodie J. I. Lédée,Michelle R. Heupel,Russell C. Babcock,Hamish A. Campbell,Daniel C. Gledhill,Xavier Hoenner,Charlie Huveneers,Fabrice R. A. Jaine,Colin A. Simpfendorfer,Matthew D. Taylor,Matthew D. Taylor,Vinay Udyawer,Robert Harcourt +15 more
TL;DR: The significance of this nationally coordinated network of receivers is demonstrated to better reveal intra-specific differences in movement profiles and discuss implications for effective management.
Journal ArticleDOI
Australia's continental-scale acoustic tracking database and its automated quality control process.
Xavier Hoenner,Charlie Huveneers,Andre Steckenreuter,Colin A. Simpfendorfer,Katherine Tattersall,Fabrice R. A. Jaine,Natalia Atkins,Russell C. Babcock,Stephanie Brodie,Jonathan Burgess,Hamish A. Campbell,Michelle R. Heupel,Bénédicte Pasquer,Roger Proctor,Matthew D. Taylor,Matthew D. Taylor,Vinay Udyawer,Robert Harcourt +17 more
TL;DR: The database and quality control procedures developed to collate 49.6 million valid detections from 1891 receiving stations are presented, which constitutes a valuable resource facilitating meta-analysis of animal movement, distributions, and habitat use and is important for relating species distribution shifts with environmental covariates.
Journal ArticleDOI

TL;DR: The results reveal the profound impact that fishing has had on reef shark populations: no sharks on almost 20% of the surveyed reefs, and shark depletion was strongly related to socio-economic conditions such as the size and proximity of the nearest market, poor governance and the density of the human population.
Journal ArticleDOI
Individual and Population Benefits of Marine Reserves for Reef Sharks
Ross G. Dwyer,Ross G. Dwyer,Nils C. Krueck,Nils C. Krueck,Vinay Udyawer,Vinay Udyawer,Michelle R. Heupel,Demian D. Chapman,Harold L. Pratt,Harold L. Pratt,Ricardo C. Garla,Colin A. Simpfendorfer +11 more
TL;DR: It is discovered that the world's officially recorded coral reef-based managed areas would need to be enforced as strict no-take MPAs and up to 5 times larger to expect protection of the majority of individuals of the five investigated reef shark species.
Journal ArticleDOI
Variable response of coastal sharks to severe tropical storms: environmental cues and changes in space use
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors used data from the Australian Institute of Marine Sciences (AIMS) and the Department of Environmental and Resource Management (DERM) to conduct fieldwork in Lake Erie.
