The Radial Velocity Experiment (RAVE): Fifth Data Release
Andrea Kunder,Georges Kordopatis,Matthias Steinmetz,Tomaz Zwitter,Paul J. McMillan,Luca Casagrande,Harry Enke,Jennifer Wojno,Marica Valentini,Cristina Chiappini,Gal Matijevic,Alessandro Siviero,Patrick de Laverny,Alejandra Recio-Blanco,Albert Bijaoui,Rosemary F. G. Wyse,James Binney,Eva K. Grebel,Amina Helmi,Paula Jofre,Teresa Antoja,Gerard Gilmore,Arnaud Siebert,Benoit Famaey,Olivier Bienaymé,Brad K. Gibson,Kenneth C. Freeman,Julio F. Navarro,Ulisse Munari,George M. Seabroke,Borja Anguiano,Marusa Zerjal,Ivan Minchev,Warren Reid,Joss Bland-Hawthorn,Janez Kos,Sanjib Sharma,Fred G. Watson,Quentin A. Parker,Ralf-Dieter Scholz,D. Burton,Paul Cass,M. Hartley,Kristin Fiegert,Milorad Stupar,Andreas Ritter,Keith Hawkins,Ortwin Gerhard,William J. Chaplin,Guy R. Davies,Yvonne Elsworth,Mikkel N. Lund,Andrea Miglio,B. Mosser +53 more
TL;DR: Data Release 5 (DR5) of the Radial Velocity Experiment (RAVE) is the fifth data release from a magnitude-limited (9 < I < 12) survey of stars randomly selected in the southern hemisphere as discussed by the authors.
Journal ArticleDOI
A vast, thin plane of corotating dwarf galaxies orbiting the Andromeda galaxy
Rodrigo A. Ibata,Geraint F. Lewis,Anthony R. Conn,Mike Irwin,Alan W. McConnachie,Scott Chapman,Michelle L. M. Collins,Mark A. Fardal,Annette M. N. Ferguson,Neil G. Ibata,A. Dougal Mackey,Nicolas F. Martin,Julio F. Navarro,R. Michael Rich,David Valls-Gabaud,Lawrence M. Widrow +15 more
TL;DR: Radial velocity measurements reveal that the satellites in this structure have the same sense of rotation about their host, and shows conclusively that substantial numbers of dwarf satellite galaxies share the same dynamical orbital properties and direction of angular momentum.
Journal ArticleDOI
The redshift dependence of the structure of massive Λ cold dark matter haloes
Liang Gao,Julio F. Navarro,Julio F. Navarro,Shaun Cole,Carlos S. Frenk,Simon D. M. White,Volker Springel,Adrian Jenkins,Angelo Fausti Neto +8 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the density profiles of relaxed CDM dark halos depend on redshift and on halo mass, and they are better approximated by the empirical formula, dlog ρ/dlog r ∝ r , first used by Einasto to fit star counts in the Milky Way.
Journal ArticleDOI
The APOSTLE simulations: solutions to the Local Group's cosmic puzzles
Till Sawala,Till Sawala,Carlos S. Frenk,Azadeh Fattahi,Julio F. Navarro,Richard G. Bower,Robert A. Crain,Claudio Dalla Vecchia,Claudio Dalla Vecchia,Michelle Furlong,John C. Helly,Adrian Jenkins,Kyle A. Oman,Matthieu Schaller,Joop Schaye,Tom Theuns,James W. Trayford,Simon D. M. White +17 more
TL;DR: In this article, a suite of cosmological hydrodynamic simulations of twelve volumes selected to match the kinematics of the Local Group (LG) members is presented. And the results from APOSTLE (A Project Of Simulating The Local Environment) are compared to the observed abundance of LG galaxies.
Journal ArticleDOI
The thermal imprint of galaxy formation on X-ray clusters
TL;DR: In this article, the authors show that the observed structure and evolution of X-ray-emitting clusters of galaxies seems to be at odds with this picture, and they argue that the excess entropy is a relic of the energetic winds generated by supernovae in the forming galaxies.
