Galactic tides and the shape and orientation of dwarf galaxy satellites
Christopher Barber,Christopher Barber,Else Starkenburg,Else Starkenburg,Julio F. Navarro,Alan W. McConnachie +5 more
TL;DR: This paper used cosmological N-body simulations from the Aquarius Project to study the tidal effects of a dark matter halo on the shape and orientation of its substructure and found that subhaloes affected by tides become substantially more spherical and show a strong radial alignment toward the center of the host halo.
Journal ArticleDOI
RAVE stars in K2 - I. Improving RAVE red giants spectroscopy using asteroseismology from K2 Campaign 1
Marica Valentini,Cristina Chiappini,Guy R. Davies,Yvonne Elsworth,B. Mosser,Mikkel N. Lund,Andrea Miglio,William J. Chaplin,T. S. Rodrigues,Corrado Boeche,Matthias Steinmetz,G. Matijevic,Georges Kordopatis,Joss Bland-Hawthorn,U. Munari,Olivier Bienaymé,Brad K. Gibson,Gerard Gilmore,Eva K. Grebel,Amina Helmi,Andrea Kunder,Paul J. McMillan,Julio F. Navarro,Quentin A. Parker,Warren Reid,George M. Seabroke,Sanjib Sharma,Alessandro Siviero,F. G. Watson,R.M.Wise,Tomaz Zwitter,A. Mott +31 more
TL;DR: In this article, a set of 87 RAVE stars with detected solar like oscillations, observed during Campaign 1 of the K2 mission (RAVE K2-C1 sample), is presented.
Journal ArticleDOI
The Pristine Inner Galaxy Survey (PIGS) I: tracing the kinematics of metal-poor stars in the Galactic bulge
Anke Arentsen,Else Starkenburg,Nicolas F. Martin,Vanessa Hill,Rodrigo A. Ibata,Andrea Kunder,Mathias Schultheis,K. A. Venn,Daniel B. Zucker,David Aguado,R. G. Carlberg,J. I. González Hernández,J. I. González Hernández,Carmela Lardo,Nicolas Longeard,Khyati Malhan,Julio F. Navarro,Rubén Sánchez-Janssen,Federico Sestito,G. F. Thomas,K. Youakim,Geraint F. Lewis,Jeffrey D. Simpson,Zhen Wan +23 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors use PIGS to trace the metal-poor inner Galaxy kinematics as a function of metallicity for the first time, finding that the rotational signal decreases with decreasing [Fe/H], until it becomes negligible for the most metalpoor stars.
Journal ArticleDOI
Accretion of satellite galaxies and the density of the Universe
TL;DR: In this article, it was shown that the observed thinness of spiral disc may not exclude a high-density universe, since current merger rates are relatively small and the associated satellites have not yet merged with the central galaxy.
Journal ArticleDOI
Diffuse interstellar band at 8620 å in rave: a new method for detecting the diffuse interstellar band in spectra of cool stars
Janez Kos,Tomaž Zwitter,Eva K. Grebel,Olivier Bienaymé,James Binney,Joss Bland-Hawthorn,Kenneth C. Freeman,Brad K. Gibson,Gerard Gilmore,Georges Kordopatis,Julio F. Navarro,Quentin A. Parker,Quentin A. Parker,Warren A. Reid,George M. Seabroke,Arnaud Siebert,Alessandro Siviero,Matthias Steinmetz,Fred G. Watson,Rosemary F. G. Wyse +19 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors proposed a new method to combine multiple spectra of hot stars into a single stellar spectrum template by finding other observed spectra that lack interstellar features and are otherwise very similar to the spectrum in question.
