TL;DR: Differences in binding to viral peptide antigens by HLA may be the major factors underlying genetic differences between HIV controllers and progressors, and genome-wide association results implicate the nature of the HLA–viral peptide interaction as the major factor modulating durable control of HIV infection.
Journal ArticleDOI
Natural History and Possible Reactivation of Human Papillomavirus in Human Immunodeficiency Virus–Positive Women
Howard D. Strickler,Robert D. Burk,Melissa Fazzari,Kathryn Anastos,Howard Minkoff,L. Stewart Massad,Charles B. Hall,Melanie C. Bacon,Alexandra M. Levine,D. Heather Watts,Michael J. Silverberg,Xiaonan Xue,Nicolas F. Schlecht,Sandra Melnick,Joel M. Palefsky +14 more
TL;DR: In HIV-positive women, plasma HIV RNA level and CD4+ count in combination appear to have a strong and statistically interactive association with incident detection of HPV, some of which may reflect HPV reactivation (e.g., in sexually inactive women).
Journal ArticleDOI
Domestic violence and childhood sexual abuse in HIV-infected women and women at risk for HIV.
Mardge H. Cohen,Catherine Deamant,Susan E. Barkan,Jean L. Richardson,Mary Young,Susan Holman,Kathryn Anastos,Judith B. Cohen,Sandra Melnick +8 more
TL;DR: The data support the hypothesis of a continuum of risk, with early childhood abuse leading to later domestic violence, which may increase the risk of behaviors leading to HIV infection.
Journal ArticleDOI
Effect of Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy on Time to Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome or Death using Marginal Structural Models
Stephen R. Cole,Miguel A. Hernán,James M. Robins,Kathryn Anastos,Joan S. Chmiel,Roger Detels,Carolyn M. Ervin,Joseph G. Feldman,Ruth M. Greenblatt,Lawrence A. Kingsley,Shenghan Lai,Mary Young,Mardge H. Cohen,Alvaro Muñoz +13 more
TL;DR: To estimate the net effect of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) on time to acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) or death, the authors used inverse probability-of-treatment weighted estimation of a marginal structural model, which can appropriately adjust for time-varying confounders affected by prior treatment or exposure.
Journal ArticleDOI
Low CD4+ T cell count as a major atherosclerosis risk factor in HIV-infected women and men
Robert C. Kaplan,Lawrence A. Kingsley,Stephen J. Gange,Lorie Benning,Lisa P. Jacobson,Jason Lazar,Kathryn Anastos,Phyllis C. Tien,Phyllis C. Tien,A. Richey Sharrett,Howard N. Hodis +10 more
TL;DR: Beyond traditional cardiovascular disease risk factors, low CD4+ T-cell count is the most robust risk factor for increased subclinical carotid atherosclerosis in HIV-infected women and men.
