TL;DR: The updated taxonomy of the family Arenaviridae and the order Bunyavirales is presented as now accepted by the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV) and additional taxonomic proposals that may affect the order in the near future are summarized.
Journal ArticleDOI
Experimental Inoculation of Egyptian Fruit Bats (Rousettus aegyptiacus) with Ebola Virus
Janusz T. Paweska,Nadia Storm,Antoinette A. Grobbelaar,Wanda Markotter,Alan Kemp,Petrus Jansen van Vuren +5 more
TL;DR: Irrespective of the route of inoculation, no virus was isolated from tissues which tested positive for EBOV RNA, and Viral RNA was not detected in oral, nasal, ocular, vaginal, penile and rectal swabs from any of the experimental groups.
Journal ArticleDOI
Lack of Marburg Virus Transmission from Experimentally Infected to Susceptible In-Contact Egyptian Fruit Bats
Janusz T. Paweska,Petrus Jansen van Vuren,Karla A. Fenton,K Graves,Antoinette A. Grobbelaar,Naazneen Moolla,Patricia A. Leman,Jacqueline Weyer,Nadia Storm,Stewart D. McCulloch,Terence Peter Scott,Wanda Markotter,Lieza Odendaal,Sarah J. Clift,Thomas W. Geisbert,Martin Hale,Martin Hale,Alan Kemp +17 more
TL;DR: It is confirmed that infection profiles are consistent with MARV replication in a reservoir host but failed to demonstrate MARV transmission through direct physical contact or indirectly via air.
Journal ArticleDOI
Isolation of a Novel Fusogenic Orthoreovirus from Eucampsipoda africana Bat Flies in South Africa
Petrus Jansen van Vuren,Michael R. Wiley,Gustavo Palacios,Nadia Storm,Stewart D. McCulloch,Wanda Markotter,Monica Birkhead,Alan Kemp,Janusz T. Paweska,Janusz T. Paweska +9 more
TL;DR: Phylogenetic analysis places this virus into a distinct clade with Baboon orthoreovirus, Bush viper reovirus and the bat-associated Broome virus, and phylogenetic and sequence data suggests that MAHLV constitutes a new species within the Orthoreov virus genus.
Journal ArticleDOI
Comparative Evaluation of the Diagnostic Performance of the Prototype Cepheid GeneXpert Ebola Assay
Petrus Jansen van Vuren,Petrus Jansen van Vuren,Antoinette A. Grobbelaar,Nadia Storm,Ousman Conteh,Kelfala Konneh,Abdul Kamara,Ian Sanne,Janusz T. Paweska,Janusz T. Paweska,Janusz T. Paweska +10 more
TL;DR: The GeneXpert Ebola POC offers an easy to operate and sensitive diagnostic tool that can be used for the rapid screening of suspected EVD cases in treatment or in holding centers during EVD outbreaks.
