Journal ArticleDOI
LTBI: latent tuberculosis infection or lasting immune responses to M. tuberculosis? A TBNET consensus statement.
Ulrich Mack,Giovanni Battista Migliori,Martina Sester,Hans L. Rieder,Stefan Ehlers,Delia Goletti,Aik Bossink,Klaus Magdorf,Christoph Hölscher,Beate Kampmann,S. M. Arend,A Detjen,Graham H. Bothamley,Jean-Pierre Zellweger,Heather Milburn,Roland Diel,Pernille Ravn,Frank Cobelens,P J Cardona,B Kan,Ivan Solovic,Raquel Duarte,Daniela Maria Cirillo +22 more
TL;DR: The main issue regarding testing is to restrict it to those who are known to be at higher risk of developing tuberculosis and who are willing to accept preventive chemotherapy, and to identify an adaptive immune response against, but not necessarily a latent infection with, M. tuberculosis.
Journal ArticleDOI
Cutting Edge: Toll-Like Receptor (TLR)2- and TLR4-Mediated Pathogen Recognition in Resistance to Airborne Infection with Mycobacterium tuberculosis
Norbert Reiling,Christoph Hölscher,Alexandra Fehrenbach,Svenja Kröger,Carsten J. Kirschning,Sanna Goyert,Stefan Ehlers +6 more
TL;DR: While TLR2 signaling contributes to innate resistance against M. tuberculosis in borderline situations, its function, and that of CD14 and TLR4, in initiating protective responses against naturally low-dose airborne infection is redundant.
Journal ArticleDOI
Sarcoidosis is associated with a truncating splice site mutation in BTNL2.
Ruta Valentonyte,Jochen Hampe,Klaus Huse,Philip Rosenstiel,Mario Albrecht,Annette Stenzel,Marion Nagy,Karoline I. Gaede,Andre Franke,Robert Haesler,Andreas Koch,Thomas Lengauer,Dirk Seegert,Norbert Reiling,Stefan Ehlers,Eberhard Schwinger,Matthias Platzer,Michael Krawczak,Joachim Müller-Quernheim,Manfred Schürmann,Stefan Schreiber +20 more
TL;DR: A systematic three-stage SNP scan of 16.4 Mb on chromosome 6p21 in as many as 947 independent cases of familial and sporadic sarcoidosis and found that a 15-kb segment of the gene butyrophilin-like 2 (BTNL2) was associated with the disease.
Journal ArticleDOI
The risk of tuberculosis related to tumour necrosis factor antagonist therapies: a TBNET consensus statement
Ivan Solovic,Martina Sester,Juan J. Gomez-Reino,Hans L. Rieder,Stefan Ehlers,Heather Milburn,Beate Kampmann,Bernhard Hellmich,Richard Groves,Stefan Schreiber,Robert S. Wallis,Giovanni Sotgiu,E. H. Scholvinck,Delia Goletti,Jean-Pierre Zellweger,Roland Diel,Loreto Carmona,Filippo Bartalesi,Pernille Ravn,Aik Bossink,Raquel Duarte,Connie Erkens,Julia E Clark,Giovanni Battista Migliori,Christoph Lange +24 more
TL;DR: The TBNET consensus statement as discussed by the authors summarises current knowledge and expert opinions and provides evidence-based recommendations to reduce the TB risk among candidates for TNF antagonist therapy, which significantly reduces the risk of progression to TB.
Journal ArticleDOI
Differentiation of T cell lymphokine gene expression: the in vitro acquisition of T cell memory.
Stefan Ehlers,Kendall A. Smith +1 more
TL;DR: It is proposed that the term "memory cell" be applied to those T cells that can be identified by their differentiated state of inducible effector-lymphokine gene expression and are functionally indistinguishable from the T cells in adult blood that presumably have undergone primary stimulation in vivo.
