Contribution of the land sector to a 1.5 °C world
Stephanie Roe,Charlotte Streck,Michael Obersteiner,Stefan Frank,Bronson W. Griscom,Laurent Drouet,Oliver Fricko,Mykola Gusti,Nancy L. Harris,Tomoko Hasegawa,Zeke Hausfather,Petr Havlik,Jo House,Gert-Jan Nabuurs,Alexander Popp,María José Sanz Sánchez,Jonathan Sanderman,Pete Smith,Elke Stehfest,Deborah Lawrence +19 more
TL;DR: In this paper, a land-sector roadmap of priority measures and regions that can help to achieve the 1.5 °C temperature goal is presented, combining a review of modelled pathways and literature on mitigation strategies.
Journal ArticleDOI
Which practices co‐deliver food security, climate change mitigation and adaptation, and combat land degradation and desertification?
Pete Smith,Katherine Calvin,Johnson Nkem,Donovan Campbell,Francesco Cherubini,Giacomo Grassi,Vladimir Korotkov,Anh Le Hoang,Shuaib Lwasa,Pamela McElwee,Ephraim Nkonya,Nobuko Saigusa,Jean-François Soussana,Miguel Angel Taboada,Frances Manning,Dorothy Kalule Nampanzira,Cristina Arias-Navarro,Matteo Vizzarri,Jo House,Stephanie Roe,Annette Cowie,Mark Rounsevell,Mark Rounsevell,Almut Arneth +23 more
TL;DR: A number of practices, such as increased food productivity, dietary change and reduced food loss and waste, can reduce demand for land conversion, thereby potentially freeing‐up land and creating opportunities for enhanced implementation of other practices, making them important components of portfolios of practices to address the combined land challenges.
Journal ArticleDOI
National mitigation potential from natural climate solutions in the tropics
Bronson W. Griscom,Bronson W. Griscom,Jonah Busch,Susan C. Cook-Patton,Peter W. Ellis,Jason Funk,Sara M. Leavitt,Guy Lomax,Guy Lomax,Will R. Turner,Melissa Chapman,Jens Engelmann,Noel Gurwick,Emily Landis,Deborah Lawrence,Yadvinder Malhi,Lisa Schindler Murray,Diego Navarrete,Stephanie Roe,Sabrina Scull,Pete Smith,Charlotte Streck,Wayne S. Walker,Thomas A. Worthington +23 more
TL;DR: This article assesses cost-effective tropical country-level potential of natural climate solutions (NCS)—protection, improved management and restoration of ecosystems—to deliver climate mitigation linked with sustainable development goals (SDGs).
Journal ArticleDOI
Land-based measures to mitigate climate change: Potential and feasibility by country.
Stephanie Roe,Charlotte Streck,Robert Beach,Jonah Busch,Melissa Chapman,Vassilis Daioglou,Vassilis Daioglou,Andre Deppermann,Jonathan C. Doelman,Jeremy Emmet‐Booth,Jens Engelmann,Oliver Fricko,Chad Frischmann,Jason Funk,Giacomo Grassi,Bronson W. Griscom,Petr Havlik,Steef V. Hanssen,Florian Humpenöder,David M. Landholm,Guy Lomax,Johannes Lehmann,Leah Mesnildrey,Gert-Jan Nabuurs,Alexander Popp,Charlotte Rivard,Jonathan Sanderman,Brent Sohngen,Pete Smith,Elke Stehfest,Dominic Woolf,Deborah Lawrence +31 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors refine and update the mitigation potentials for 20 land-based measures in >200 countries and five regions, comparing the bottom-up estimates with integrated assessment models (IAMs).
Journal ArticleDOI
Considering sustainability thresholds for BECCS in IPCC and biodiversity assessments
TL;DR: In this article, the authors contrast insights from these reports with other recent literature and demonstrate that BECCS bears additional risks for biodiversity, livelihoods, and intertemporal carbon balances, which may be best avoided by demandsidedriven rapid decarbonization and less landintensive carbon dioxide removal technologies.
