Wollenberg,Joseph Fargione +33 more
TL;DR: It is shown that NCS can provide over one-third of the cost-effective climate mitigation needed between now and 2030 to stabilize warming to below 2 °C.
Journal ArticleDOI
Natural climate solutions for the United States.
Joseph Fargione,Steven Bassett,Timothy M. Boucher,Scott D. Bridgham,Richard T. Conant,Susan C. Cook-Patton,Susan C. Cook-Patton,Peter W. Ellis,Alessandra Falcucci,James W. Fourqurean,Trisha Gopalakrishna,Huan Gu,Benjamin B. Henderson,Matthew D. Hurteau,Kevin D. Kroeger,Timm Kroeger,Tyler J. Lark,Sara M. Leavitt,Guy Lomax,Robert I. McDonald,J. Griscom +39 more
TL;DR: The potential of natural climate solutions (NCS) to increase carbon storage and avoid greenhouse gas emissions in the United States is quantified and it is found that at current carbon market prices, 299 Tg CO2e year−1 could be achieved.
Journal ArticleDOI
The role of soil carbon in natural climate solutions
Deborah A. Bossio,Susan C. Cook-Patton,Peter W. Ellis,Joseph Fargione,Jonathan Sanderman,Pete Smith,Stephen A. Wood,Stephen A. Wood,Robert J. Zomer,M. von Unger,I. Emmer,Bronson W. Griscom +11 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors quantify the role of soil carbon in natural (land-based) climate solutions and review some of the project design mechanisms available to tap into the potential.
Journal ArticleDOI
Mapping carbon accumulation potential from global natural forest regrowth
Susan C. Cook-Patton,Susan C. Cook-Patton,Sara M. Leavitt,David Gibbs,Nancy L. Harris,Kristine Lister,Kristina J. Anderson-Teixeira,Kristina J. Anderson-Teixeira,Russell D. Briggs,Robin L. Chazdon,Robin L. Chazdon,Robin L. Chazdon,Thomas W. Crowther,Peter W. Ellis,Heather P. Griscom,Valentine Herrmann,Karen D. Holl,Richard A. Houghton,Cecilia Larrosa,Guy Lomax,Richard Lucas,Palle Madsen,Yadvinder Malhi,Alain Paquette,John D. Parker,Keryn I. Paul,Devin Routh,Stephen H. Roxburgh,Sassan Saatchi,Johan van den Hoogen,Wayne S. Walker,Charlotte E. Wheeler,Stephen A. Wood,Liang Xu,Bronson W. Griscom +34 more
TL;DR: A global, one-kilometre-resolution map of potential aboveground carbon accumulation rates for the first 30 years of natural forest regrowth is presented, indicating that default rates from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) may be underestimated and maximum climate mitigation potential from natural forest Regrowth is 11 per cent lower than previously reported.
Journal ArticleDOI
National mitigation potential from natural climate solutions in the tropics
Bronson W. Griscom,Bronson W. Griscom,Jonah Busch,Susan C. Cook-Patton,Peter W. Ellis,Jason Funk,Sara M. Leavitt,Guy Lomax,Guy Lomax,Will R. Turner,Melissa Chapman,Jens Engelmann,Noel Gurwick,Emily Landis,Deborah Lawrence,Yadvinder Malhi,Lisa Schindler Murray,Diego Navarrete,Stephanie Roe,Sabrina Scull,Pete Smith,Charlotte Streck,Wayne S. Walker,Thomas A. Worthington +23 more
TL;DR: This article assesses cost-effective tropical country-level potential of natural climate solutions (NCS)—protection, improved management and restoration of ecosystems—to deliver climate mitigation linked with sustainable development goals (SDGs).
