El-Sayed,Najib M. El-Sayed +104 more
TL;DR: Comparisons of the cytoskeleton and endocytic trafficking systems of Trypanosoma brucei with those of humans and other eukaryotic organisms reveal major differences.
Journal ArticleDOI
The genome sequence of Rickettsia prowazekii and the origin of mitochondria
Siv G. E. Andersson,Alireza Zomorodipour,Jan Andersson,Thomas Sicheritz-Pontén,U. Cecilia M. Alsmark,Raf M. Podowski,A. Kristina Näslund,Ann-Sofie Eriksson,Herbert H. Winkler,Charles G. Kurland +9 more
TL;DR: The complete genome sequence of the obligate intracellular parasite Rickettsia prowazekii, the causative agent of epidemic typhus, is described, which contains 834 protein-coding genes and is more closely related to mitochondria than is any other microbe studied so far.
Journal ArticleDOI
The genome of the protist parasite Entamoeba histolytica
Brendan J. Loftus,Iain J. Anderson,Robert L. Davies,U. Cecilia M. Alsmark,John Samuelson,Paolo Amedeo,Paola Roncaglia,Matthew Berriman,Robert P. Hirt,Barbara J. Mann,Tomo Nozaki,Bernard B. TL;DR: The genome of E. histolytica is presented, which reveals a variety of metabolic adaptations shared with two other amitochondrial protist pathogens: Giardia lamblia and Trichomonas vaginalis, and provides new insights into the workings and genome evolution of a major human pathogen.
Journal ArticleDOI

TL;DR: No evidence that these species are descended from an ancestor that contained a photosynthetic endosymbiont is revealed, and a conserved core proteome of about 6200 genes in large syntenic polycistronic gene clusters is revealed.
Journal ArticleDOI

TL;DR: The genome sequence of the protist Trichomonas vaginalis predicts previously unknown functions for the hydrogenosome, which support a common evolutionary origin of this unusual organelle with mitochondria.
