Abstract: Anisotropic growth of ZnO nanorod arrays on ZnO thin films was achieved at a temperature of 90° C by a surfactant-assisted soft chemical approach with control over size and orientation. ZnO thin films with c-axis preferred orientation had been achieved by the sol−gel technique. Lengths, diameters, and the degree of alignment of the ZnO nanorods were controlled by changing the experimental parameters. It was observed that the surfactant was essential to restrict the lateral growth of the nanorods, whereas the pH level of the reaction medium controlled the length of the nanorods. On the other hand, the orientation of the nanorods depended on the crystalline orientation of the film as well as the pH of the reaction medium. Room-temperature photoluminescence studies revealed that the ZnO nanorods with the best alignment exhibited the best emission property. Abstract: A long-chain amino acid containing dipeptide has been found to form a hydrogel in phosphate buffer whose pH ranges from 6.0 to 8.8. The hydrogel formed at pH 7.46 has been characterized by small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), wide-angle powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM) imaging and rheological analyses. The microscopic imaging studies suggest the formation of a nanofibrillar three-dimensional (3D) network for the hydrogel. As observed visually and confirmed rheologically, the hydrogel at pH 7.46 exhibits thixotropy. This thixotropic property can be exploited to inject the peptide. Furthermore, the hydrogel exhibits remarkable antibacterial activity against Gram-negative bacteria Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, which are responsible for many common diseases. The hydrogel has practical applicability due to its biocompatibility with human red blood cells and human fibroblast cells. Interestingly, this hydrogel shows high resistance toward proteolytic enzymes, making it a new potential antimicrobial agent for future applications. It has also been observed that a small change in molecular structure of the gelator peptide not only turns the gelator into a nongelator molecule under similar conditions, but it also has a significant negative impact on its bactericidal character.

Abstract: The synthesis of l-serine-based zwitterionic polymers, poly(l-serinyl acrylate)s (PSAs), of controllable molecular weights and low polydispersities via reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization in water at 70 °C is described. The obtained homopolymer PSA exhibits dual responsiveness toward pH and temperature in aqueous solution. The PSA exhibits an isoelectric point near pH 2.85 where the PSA molecules exist in its zwitterionic form. In the pH range of 2.3–3.5, the aqueous PSA solution appears as a two-phase system due to the formation of insoluble aggregates through the intra- and intermolecular electrostatic interaction between the pendent ammonium and carboxylate groups of the neighboring zwitterionic PSA molecules. Furthermore, in this pH range, the two-phase PSA solution becomes one-phase upon heating, exhibiting distinct reversible upper critical solution temperature (UCST)-type phase transition.
