TL;DR: TMSI benefits from exploiting the temporally local structure of EEG signals, and could be a potential method for robust performance of SSVEP-based BCI.
Abstract: Multivariate synchronization index (MSI) has been proved to be an efficient method for frequency recognition in SSVEP-BCI systems. It measures the correlation according to the entropy of the normalized eigenvalues of the covariance matrix of multichannel signals. In the MSI method, the estimation of covariance matrix omits the temporally local structure of samples. In this study, a new spatio-temporal method, termed temporally local MSI (TMSI), was presented. This new method explicitly exploits temporally local information in modelling the covariance matrix. In order to evaluate the performance of the TMSI, we performs a comparison between the two methods on the real SSVEP datasets from eleven subjects. The results show that the TMSI outperforms the standard MSI. TMSI benefits from exploiting the temporally local structure of EEG signals, and could be a potential method for robust performance of SSVEP-based BCI.

TL;DR: It is shown that use of azimuthal rotation illumination allows SPRM spatial resolution to be enhanced by up to an order of magnitude.
Abstract: Surface plasmon resonance microscopy (SPRM) with single-direction illumination is a powerful platform for biomedical imaging because of its wide-field, label-free, and high-surface-sensitivity imaging capabilities. However, two disadvantages prevent wider use of SPRM. The first is its poor spatial resolution that can be as large as several micrometers. The second is that SPRM requires use of metal films as sample substrates; this introduces working wavelength limitations. In addition, cell culture growth on metal films is not as universally available as growth on dielectric substrates. Here we show that use of azimuthal rotation illumination allows SPRM spatial resolution to be enhanced by up to an order of magnitude. The metal film can also be replaced by a dielectric multilayer and then a different label-free surface-sensitive photonic microscopy is developed, which has more choices in terms of the working wavelength, polarization, and imaging section, and will bring opportunities for applications in biology.

TL;DR: In this article, in situ X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) was employed to determine thermal expansion and crystal fragmentation, primarily attributed to its crystal state variation, and the results showed that the change of crystal volume mainly stemmed from the thermal expansion at the c axis of crystal lattice, and TATB crystal had the same thermal expansion coefficients at a and b axes.
Abstract: The present report aims to discuss the crystal state variation of 1,3,5-triamino-2,4,6-trinitrobenzene (TATB) suffering from thermal cycling process. In this study, in situ X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) was employed to determine thermal expansion and crystal fragmentation, primarily attributed to its crystal state variation. The results showed that the change of crystal volume mainly stemmed from the thermal expansion at the c axis of crystal lattice, and TATB crystal had the same thermal expansion coefficients at a and b axes. It was also demonstrated that crystal fragmentation occurred during this process, and more auto-repair happened in the [002] plane of TATB than other planes. These results will have an implication on the process of TATB-based materials.

TL;DR: It was found that gn was positively correlated with relative growth rate, which is compatible with the postulate that circadian-driven nocturnal conductance enhances predawn stomatal conductance, thereby priming stomata for photosynthesis in early daylight.
Abstract: Nocturnal stomatal conductance contributes to water loss at night without carbon gain in C3 or C4 plants because photosynthesis does not occur in the dark. The functional relevance of nocturnal conductance thus remains an unresolved conundrum. Here, we review and re-analyse previously published datasets on nocturnal conductance (gn ) globally (176 species) to synthesize our current understanding on its potential biological function and to identify remaining research gaps. We found that gn was positively correlated with relative growth rate, which is compatible with the postulate that circadian-driven nocturnal conductance enhances predawn stomatal conductance, thereby priming stomata for photosynthesis in early daylight. The variation in gn across plant species and functional types was not consistent with the hypotheses that the main function of gn is to: remove excess CO2, which might limit growth; enhance oxygen delivery to the functional sapwood; enhance nutrient supply; or that gn is due to stomatal leakiness. We suggest further study regarding the potential of gn to be an important functional and ecological trait influencing competitive outcomes and we outline a research programme to achieve that objective.
