TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigated behavior in the open field and shuttle avoidance, for as well as tissue lead burdens of pre- and postnatally lead-exposed rats and found that lead exposure associated with behavioural alterations.
Abstract: In view of conflicting results in literature concerning lead exposure associated with behavioural alterations, this study investigated behaviour in the open-field and shuttle avoidance, for as well as tissue lead burdens of pre- and postnatally lead-exposed rats. Rats were exposed to the metal from conception to weaning by giving the dams 0.5, 2.0 or 4.0 mM lead acetate in drinking water. This regimen did not affect body weight gain of dams or offspring development and had no effect on cerebral weights nor on haematological parameters of 23-day-old rats. In 1-day-old rats, lead accumulated in the blood but not in the brain, whereas both in 23-day-old rats and in dams lead accumulated in blood, kidney and cerebral cortex. In the open-field, lead-exposed groups showed higher locomotor activity in the test session as compared to controls and did not show any decrease in rearing responses in the test, indicating less habituation. Lead-treated rats subjected to a shuttle avoidance task showed no significant increase in avoidance responses between sessions as compared to control, indicating less retention. Moreover, only the control group presented a significant reduction of the footshock escape latency along testing session, suggesting a lead effect on footshock escape acquisition. In the shuttle box, intertrial crossing responses were not affected by lead treatment. The behavioural alterations occurred in animals with blood lead levels in the range 11-50.6 micrograms/dl.

TL;DR: The results obtained showed that although Araucaria angustifolia was the dominant species of the canopy layer, it did not appear in the natural regeneration layer and Mimosa scabrella was the most important tree species found in the seed bank in the soil.
Abstract: The study was made in the Genetic Reserve Forest of Cacador, in the State of Santa Catarina, Brazil. In the study of natural regeneration were established 10 plots with an area of 250 sq m (25m x 10m). Inside the plots, were collected a layer of soil with foliage up to 3 cm of depth in the 40 samples with an area of 0,5m x 0,5m to the analyse of the seed bank in the soil. Moreover, 20 traps with an area of 0,5m x 0,5m were established to evaluate seed rain. The results obtained showed that although Araucaria angustifolia was the dominant species of the canopy layer, it did not appear in the natural regeneration layer. On the other hand, Mimosa scabrella was the most important tree species found in the seed bank in the soil. The relation between the three parameters evaluated suggested an irregular distribution of the species in the study site.

TL;DR: In this paper, a control strategy for three-level boost power factor correction converter with fully regulated two outputs is proposed, and a switching logic law is established to minimize the input current ripple.
Abstract: In this paper, a control strategy for three-level boost power factor correction converter with fully regulated two outputs is proposed. Beyond two outputs which are completely regulated, a switching logic law is established to minimize the input current ripple. Besides the features of the three-level boost power converter already known, the proposed approach has the advantage of regulating two output voltages for unbalanced loads, guaranteeing voltage sharing across the semiconductor device independent of the load, based on a Lyapunov-like technique. The robustness of the feedback control system is investigated, and experimental results are reported.

TL;DR: In this article, a voltage source inverter, connected in series with the AC supply through a transformer, is used to compensate the input voltage variations to achieve a regulated load voltage.
Abstract: Regulation of load voltage in single-phase applications is becoming an important issue for critical loads. This paper proposes a method to regulate a single-phase AC source by using a series connected auxiliary voltage source. A voltage source inverter, connected in series with the AC supply through a transformer, is used to compensate the input voltage variations to achieve a regulated load voltage. Input power factor improvement can also be obtained, when operating with reactive load, by phase-shifting the compensating voltage with respect to the input voltage. The operation of the compensator in all four quadrants allows the compensation of any voltage drop, and not only the reactive voltage drop within the same path. The total kVA rating for the system is a fraction of the load total power, and is determined by the maximum allowable line voltage variations. The use of a series connection associated with a high-performance modulation technique results in a high-quality output with a small size filter. This paper includes a description of the proposed method, implementation principles, design equations and a design example. Steady-state performance features are investigated. Simulated and experimental results confirm the concept and feasibility of the proposed system.

TL;DR: Samples of the toxic Brazilian plant, Baccharis coridifolia, were collected during the growing season, and the toxicities in calves of the plant materials were correlated with the levels of macrocyclic trichothecenes present.
Abstract: Samples of the toxic Brazilian plant, Baccharis coridifolia, which is responsible for numerous cases of livestock poisoning in southern Brazil and Argentina, were collected during the growing season, and the toxicities in calves of the plant materials were correlated with the levels of macrocyclic trichothecenes present. Female plants in flower were considerably more toxic than male plants or plants not in flower. Plants not in flower were of intermediate toxicity. The female plants in flower typically contained 5-10 times the levels of toxins as were found in the male plants. In addition, six new glucosides of the macrocyclic trichothecenes were isolated and characterized. The most prominent glucosides, those of roridins A and E, were found in high levels in the female plants.

TL;DR: In this paper, the Eucalyptus grandis taper was adjusted by a 5 degree polynomial, having as dependent variable the relative diameter (d i /d) and as independent variable h i /h), which showed good adjustment and good statistical precision.
Abstract: In this paper it was studied the Eucalyptus grandis taper in order to determinate the volume and formation of wood assortment in two classes: sawmill, consisting of logs with 30 cm minimun diameter overbark and lenght of 4,20m, 3,40m and 2,60m, with priority of getting higher sizes groups; industrial logs or segments of it, with diameter between 7cm and 30cm overbark. The taper was adjusted by a 5 degree polynomial, having as dependent variable the relative diameter (d i /d) and as independent variable the relative height (h i /h), which showed good adjustment and good statistical precision. This result shows the possibility of estimating either the absolute and relative volume of the assorment by integration of the taper function.

TL;DR: It is demonstrated that intrahippocampal co-administration of GMP reverses the facilitatory effect of glutamate on the inhibitory avoidance learning paradigm and inhibits [3H]glutamate binding in hippocampal synaptic plasma membranes, suggesting that guanine nucleotides may modulate glutamate actions.
Abstract: Previous studies have demonstrated that post-training intrahippocampal glutamate administration improves inhibitory avoidance task performance in rats. Antagonism of the agonist actions of glutamate by guanine nucleotides has been shown at the molecular and behavioural level. In the present investigation we demonstrate that intrahippocampal co-administration of GMP (guanosine 5'-monophosphate) reverses the facilitatory effect of glutamate on the inhibitory avoidance learning paradigm and inhibits [3H]glutamate binding in hippocampal synaptic plasma membranes. These results suggest that guanine nucleotides may modulate glutamate actions.

TL;DR: In this paper, a quantitative approach of predicting the growth and yield of natural forests is described and applied, aimed at helping the forest manager in decision making concerning the choice of an appropriate cutting cycle.
Abstract: A quantitative approach of predicting the growth and yield of natural forests is described and applied. The method proposed aimed at helping the forest manager in decision making concerning the choice of an appropriate cutting cycle. The approach is based upon the transition matrix model. The data used in the simulation model constructed in this study came from a natural forest in Japan remeasured during 10 years. The parameters necessary for implementation of the method are: the transition matrix of diameter classes, mortality and recruitment estimates for the forest under natural condition and open canopy, and the acceleration of growth rate due to human interference in the stand. The application of the model is demonstrate showing its potential utilization in simulating the effect of different cutting intensities. It was concluded that the model proposed might be a valuable tool for the manager to predict the growth and cutting cycle of logged uneven-aged forests.

Abstract: The objective of this study was to structurate the yield of Pinus taeda L. forest, located at the country municipality of Cambara do Sul, RS, according to age, potential of sites and applied management. Data was collected from temporary and permanent parcels and from the trunk analysis. Mathematic equations were used to estimate the development of the remaining populations after thinning and the K-Magin factor was used to rectify the thinning volume, varying from 0.76 to 0.78. The results grouped in yield tables for the sites 16 to 28 showed a volume of 243.7 m 3 /ha and 911.0 m 3 /ha, respectivelly, for the age of 16 years old. The average annual growth at this age, considering the cut age employed by the company reached 15.23 m 3 /ha/year for the site index 16 and 56,97 m 3 /ha for the site index 28. The results also showed the yield loss due to early thinnings in poor sites and late thinnings in good sites.
