Abstract: mias and lethality, reduced the increase in free radical blood levels and left-ventricle histologic alterations, and augmented the extracellular signal–regulated kinase activation. Treatment with the melanocortin peptides adrenocorticotropin and 2-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (162 nmol/kg intravenously or 16.2 nmol/kg intracerebroventricularly, during coronary occlusion) produced the same protective effects of electrical stimulation and with the same muscarinic acetylcholine receptor– dependent mechanism, seemingly through brain activation (mediated by melanocortin MC3 receptors, as previously described) of such efferent vagal pathway. Conclusions: The present results give evidence for the identification of a protective, melanocortin-activated, efferent vagal cholinergic pathway, operative in conditions of myocardial ischemia/reperfusion. These data suggest that melanocortins and pertinent compounds able to activate such a pathway could provide the potential for development of a new class of drugs for a novel approach to management of ischemic heart disease. Abstract: Background Growing evidence raises concern about possible associations of high selenium exposure with diabetes in selenium-replete populations such as the US. In countries with lower selenium status, such as Italy, there is little epidemiological evidence on the association between selenium and diabetes. This study examined the prospective association between dietary selenium intake and risk of type 2 diabetes.

Abstract: The importance of honey adulteration detection has recently increased owing to the limited production levels in recent years and the relative high price of honey; therefore, this illegal practice has become more and more attractive to producers. Hence, the need has arisen for more effective analytical methods aiming at detecting honey adulteration. The present research presents an effective method to detect adulteration in honey falsified by intentional addition of different concentrations of commercial sugar syrups, using one-dimensional (1D) and two-dimensional (2D) nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) coupled with multivariate statistical analysis. Sixty-three authentic and 63 adulterated honey samples were analyzed. To prepare adulterated honeys, seven different sugar syrups normally used for nutrition of bees were used.
