TL;DR: In this article, a robust framework for the application of compound-specific hydrogen isotopes in tropical Africa is presented, where the authors show that the δD values of the aquatic lipid biomarker n-C17 alkane were not correlated with the ǫd values of lake water, and that the combination of carbon and hydrogen isotope does help to differentiate between the metabolic pathway and growth form of organisms and therefore, the source of hydrogen used during lipid biosynthesis.

Abstract: When a stretched elastomer is laminated to a flat plastic frame, a complex shape is formed, which is termed a minimum-energy structure. It is shown how self-organized structures can be applied in the development of actuators with complex, out-of-plane actuationmodes. This unusual concept is then demonstrated in the case of dielectric elastomer actuators. Among advantages of this approach are the simplicity in manufacturing, the potential complexity and sophistication of the manufactured structures, and the general benefits of the concept when applied to other electro-mechanically active materials.

Abstract: Colloidal gold modified carbon paste electrodes were prepared by mixing 24-nm-diameter colloidal Au particles with carbon paste. The modified electrodes displayed a low charging current and a favorable electrochemical response of hexacyanoferrate (III). The direct electrochemical behavior of a horse-heart cytochrome c (cyt.c) adsorbed on this electrode surface is described. It showed a surface-controlled electrode process with the electron transfer rate constant of (1.21±0.08) s−1 and α of 0.67. Cyclic voltammograms showed small peak-to-peak separations at low scan rates. The adsorbed cyt.c maintained its activity and could also electrocatalyze the reduction of hydrogen peroxide. Since this behavior was quite pronounced the electrode was used for H2O2 detection. The KMapp value for this sensor was found to be 2.28±0.17 mM, allowing measurements down to 0.01 mM H2O2.

Abstract: Many plants accumulate substantial starch reserves in their leaves during the day and remobilize them at night to provide carbon and energy for maintenance and growth. In this paper, we explore the role of a sugar-signaling metabolite, trehalose-6-phosphate (Tre6P), in regulating the accumulation and turnover of transitory starch in Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) leaves. Ethanol-induced overexpression of trehalose-phosphate synthase during the day increased Tre6P levels up to 11-fold. There was a transient increase in the rate of starch accumulation in the middle of the day, but this was not linked to reductive activation of ADP-glucose pyrophosphorylase. A 2- to 3-fold increase in Tre6P during the night led to significant inhibition of starch degradation. Maltose and maltotriose did not accumulate, suggesting that Tre6P affects an early step in the pathway of starch degradation in the chloroplasts. Starch granules isolated from induced plants had a higher orthophosphate content than granules from noninduced control plants, consistent either with disruption of the phosphorylation-dephosphorylation cycle that is essential for efficient starch breakdown or with inhibition of starch hydrolysis by β-amylase. Nonaqueous fractionation of leaves showed that Tre6P is predominantly located in the cytosol, with estimated in vivo Tre6P concentrations of 4 to 7 µm in the cytosol, 0.2 to 0.5 µm in the chloroplasts, and 0.05 µm in the vacuole. It is proposed that Tre6P is a component in a signaling pathway that mediates the feedback regulation of starch breakdown by sucrose, potentially linking starch turnover to demand for sucrose by growing sink organs at night.

Abstract: SUMMARY Earthquake swarms are often assumed to result from an intrusion of fluids into the seismogenic zone, causing seismicity patterns which significantly differ from aftershock sequences. But neither the temporal evolution nor the energy release of earthquake swarms is generally well understood. Because of the lack of descriptive empirical laws, the comparison with model simulations is typically restricted to aspects of the overall behaviour such as the frequency‐ magnitude distribution. However, previous investigations into a large earthquake swarm which occurred in the year 2000 in Vogtland/northwest Bohemia, Central Europe, revealed some well-defined characteristics which allow a rigorous test of model assumptions. In this study, simulations are performed of a discretized fault plane embedded in a 3-D elastic half-space. Earthquakes are triggered by fluid intrusion as well as by co-seismic and post-seismic stress changes. The model is able to reproduce the main observations, such as the fractal temporal occurrence of earthquakes, embedded aftershock sequences, and a power-law increase of the average seismic moment release. All these characteristics are found to result from stress triggering, whereas fluid diffusion is manifested in the spatiotemporal spreading of the hypocentres.
