Abstract: It is well established that age-related decline of the biological capacity of a woman to reproduce is primarily related to the poor developmental potential of her gametes. This renders female ageing the most significant determinant of success in IVF. Starting with a reference picture of the main molecular and cellular failures of aged oocytes, granulosa cells and follicular microenvironment, this review focuses on age-related biochemical mechanisms underlying these changes. According to the most relevant concept of ageing, age-associated malfuction results from physiological accumulation of irreparable damage to biomolecules as an unavoidable side effect of normal metabolism. More than a decade after the free radical theory of ovarian ageing, biological and clinical research supporting the involvement of oxidative injuries in follicle ageing is discussed. Looking for the aetiology of oxidative stress, we consider the effect of ageing on ovarian and follicular vascularization. Then, we propose a potential role of advanced glycation end-products known to be involved in the physiological ageing of most tissues and organs. We conclude that future investigation of age-related molecular damage in the different ovarian components will be imperative in order to evaluate the possibility to save or rescue the developmental potential of aged oocytes.

Abstract: PURPOSE This retrospective study evaluated treatment outcome of cast post and core and Composipost systems after 4 yrs of clinical service. MATERIALS AND METHODS 200 patients were included in the study. They were divided in two groups of 100 endodontically treated teeth restored with a post. Group 1: Composipost systems were luted into root canal following the manufacturer's instructions. Group 2: Cast post and cores were cemented into root canal preparations with a traditional technique. The patients were recalled after 6 months, 1, 2 and 4 yrs and clinical and radiographic examinations were completed. Endodontic and prosthodontic results were recorded. RESULTS Group 1: 95% of the teeth restored with Composiposts showed clinical success; 3% of these samples were excluded for noncompliance and 2% showed endodontic failure. Group 2: Clinical success was found with 84% of teeth restored with cast post and core. 2% of these samples were excluded for noncompliance, 9% showed root fracture, 2% dislodgment of crown and 3% endodontic failure. Statistical evaluation showed significant differences between Groups 1 and 2 (P < 0.001). The results of this retrospective study indicated that the Composipost system was superior to the conventional cast post and core system after 4 yrs of clinical service.

Abstract: It appears that the tapetum is universally present in land plants, even though it is sometimes difficult to recognize, because it serves mostly as a tissue for meiocyte/spore nutrition. In addition to this main function, the tapetum has other functions, namely the production of the locular fluid, the production and release of callase, the conveying of P.A.S. positive material towards the loculus, the formation of exine precursors, viscin threads and orbicules (= Ubisch bodies), the production of sporophytic proteins and enzymes, and of pollenkitt/tryphine. Not all these functions are present in all land plants:Embryophyta. Two main tapetal types are usually distinguished in theSpermatophyta: the secretory or parietal type and the amoeboid or periplasmodial type; in lower groups, however, other types may be recognized, with greater or lesser differences. A hypothetical phylogenesis of the tapetum is proposed on the basis of its morphological appearance and of the nutritional relations with meiocytes/spores. The evolutionary trends of the tapeta tend towards a more and more intimate and increasingly greater contact with the spores/pollen grains. Three evolutionary trends can be recognized: 1) an intrusion of the tapetal cells between the spores, 2) a loss of tapetal cell walls, and 3) increasing nutrition through direct contact in narrow anthers.

Abstract: The TOTEM Experiment will measure the total pp cross-section with the luminosity-independent method and study elastic and diffractive scattering at the LHC. To achieve optimum forward coverage for charged particles emitted by the pp collisions in the interaction point IP5, two tracking telescopes, T1 and T2, will be installed on each side in the pseudorapidity region 3.1 ≤ |η| ≤ 6.5, and Roman Pot stations will be placed at distances of ±147 m and ±220 m from IP5. Being an independent experiment but technically integrated into CMS, TOTEM will first operate in standalone mode to pursue its own physics programme and at a later stage together with CMS for a common physics programme. This article gives a description of the TOTEM apparatus and its performance.

Abstract: A search for a standard model Higgs boson decaying into a pair of tau leptons is performed using events recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC in 2011 and 2012. The dataset corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 4.9 inverse femtobarns at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV and 19.7 inverse femtobarns at 8 TeV. Each tau lepton decays hadronically or leptonically to an electron or a muon, leading to six different final states for the tau-lepton pair, all considered in this analysis. An excess of events is observed over the expected background contributions, with a local significance larger than 3 standard deviations for m[H] values between 115 and 130 GeV. The best fit of the observed H to tau tau signal cross section for m[H] = 125 GeV is 0.78 +- 0.27 times the standard model expectation. These observations constitute evidence for the 125 GeV Higgs boson decaying to a pair of tau leptons.
