TL;DR: In this article, the authors review the thirty-year history of ML by elaborating on supervised learning, unsupervised learning, reinforcement learning and deep learning and investigate their employment in the compelling applications of wireless networks, including heterogeneous networks, cognitive radios (CR), Internet of Things (IoT), machine to machine networks (M2M), and so on.
Abstract: Future wireless networks have a substantial potential in terms of supporting a broad range of complex compelling applications both in military and civilian fields, where the users are able to enjoy high-rate, low-latency, low-cost and reliable information services. Achieving this ambitious goal requires new radio techniques for adaptive learning and intelligent decision making because of the complex heterogeneous nature of the network structures and wireless services. Machine learning (ML) algorithms have great success in supporting big data analytics, efficient parameter estimation and interactive decision making. Hence, in this article, we review the thirty-year history of ML by elaborating on supervised learning, unsupervised learning, reinforcement learning and deep learning. Furthermore, we investigate their employment in the compelling applications of wireless networks, including heterogeneous networks (HetNets), cognitive radios (CR), Internet of Things (IoT), machine to machine networks (M2M), and so on. This article aims for assisting the readers in clarifying the motivation and methodology of the various ML algorithms, so as to invoke them for hitherto unexplored services as well as scenarios of future wireless networks.

TL;DR: The design of asynchronous controller, which covers the well-known mode-independent controller and synchronous controller as special cases, is addressed and the DC motor device is applied to demonstrate the practicability of the derived asynchronous synthesis scheme.
Abstract: The issue of asynchronous passive control is addressed for Markov jump systems in this technical note. The asynchronization phenomenon appears between the system modes and controller modes, which is described by a hidden Markov model. Accordingly, a hidden Markov jump model is used to name the resultant closed-loop system. By utilizing the matrix inequality technique, three equivalent sufficient conditions are obtained, which can guarantee the hidden Markov jump systems to be stochastically passive. Based on the established conditions, the design of asynchronous controller, which covers the well-known mode-independent controller and synchronous controller as special cases, is addressed. The DC motor device is applied to demonstrate the practicability of the derived asynchronous synthesis scheme.

TL;DR: In this paper, the waveguiding properties of a new type of low-loss optical waveguide have been reported, where the photonic crystal fiber can be engineered to support the fundamental guided mode at every wavelength within the transparency window of silica.
Abstract: We report on the waveguiding properties of a new type of low-loss optical waveguide. The photonic crystal fiber can be engineered to support only the fundamental guided mode at every wavelength within the transparency window of silica. Experimentally, a robust single mode has been observed over a wavelength range from 337nm to beyond 1550nm (restricted only by available wavelength sources). By studying the number of guided modes for fibers with different parameters and the use of an effective index model we are able to quantify the requirements for monomode operation. The requirements are independent of the scale of the fiber for sufficiently short wavelengths. Further support for the predictions of the effective index model is given by the variation of the spot size with wavelength,

TL;DR: In this article, an intervention group (n=23) of preschool children with autism was identified on the basis of parent preference for early intensive behavioral intervention and a comparison group (N=21) identified as receiving treatment as usual.
Abstract: An intervention group (n=23) of preschool children with autism was identified on the basis of parent preference for early intensive behavioral intervention and a comparison group (n=21) identified as receiving treatment as usual. Prospective assessment was undertaken before treatment, after 1 year of treatment, and again after 2 years. Groups did not differ on assessments at baseline but after 2 years, robust differences favoring intensive behavioral intervention were observed on measures of intelligence, language, daily living skills, positive social behavior, and a statistical measure of best outcome for individual children. Measures of parental well-being, obtained at the same three time points, produced no evidence that behavioral intervention created increased problems for either mothers or fathers of children receiving it.

TL;DR: Structural equation models showed that articulatory skills and syllable and rime awareness predicted later phoneme awareness, and children's rime skills developed earlier than their phoneme skills.
Abstract: A short-term longitudinal study was carried out on a group of 67 preschool children. At three points in time over a 12-month period, the children were given tests measuring their syllable, rime, and phoneme awareness, speech and language skills, and letter knowledge. In general, children's rime skills developed earlier than their phoneme skills. Structural equation models showed that articulatory skills and syllable and rime awareness predicted later phoneme awareness.
