TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present radial entropy profiles of the intracluster medium (ICM) for a collection of 239 clusters taken from the Chandra X-ray Observatory's Data Archive, and find that most ICM entropy profiles are well-fit by a model which is a power-law at large radii and approaches a constant value at small radii.
Abstract: We present radial entropy profiles of the intracluster medium (ICM) for a collection of 239 clusters taken from the Chandra X-ray Observatory's Data Archive. Entropy is of great interest because it controls ICM global properties and records the thermal history of a cluster. Entropy is therefore a useful quantity for studying the effects of feedback on the cluster environment and investigating any breakdown of cluster self-similarity. We find that most ICM entropy profiles are well-fit by a model which is a power-law at large radii and approaches a constant value at small radii: K(r) = K0 + K100(r/100 kpc), where K0 quantifies the typical excess of core entropy above the best fitting power-law found at larger radii. We also show that the K0 distributions of both the full archival sample and the primary HIFLUGCS sample of Reiprich (2001) are bimodal with a distinct gap between K0 ~ 30 - 50 keV cm^2 and population peaks at K0 ~ 15 keV cm^2 and K0 ~ 150 keV cm^2. The effects of PSF smearing and angular resolution on best-fit K0 values are investigated using mock Chandra observations and degraded entropy profiles, respectively. We find that neither of these effects is sufficient to explain the entropy-profile flattening we measure at small radii. The influence of profile curvature and number of radial bins on best-fit K0 is also considered, and we find no indication K0 is significantly impacted by either. For completeness, we include previously unpublished optical spectroscopy of Halpha and [N II] emission lines discussed in Cavagnolo et al. (2008a). TL;DR: In this article, a pyrochlore antiferromagnet in which the moments reside on a network of corner-sharing tetrahedra was studied. But unlike other geometrically frustrated systems, this system remains paramagnetic down to 0.07 K, rather than ordering into a conventional N\'eel or spin-glass-like state.
Abstract: Neutron scattering, muon spin relaxation, and dc susceptibility studies have been carried out on polycrystalline ${\mathrm{Tb}}_{2}{\mathrm{Ti}}_{2}{\mathrm{O}}_{7}$, a pyrochlore antiferromagnet in which the ${\mathrm{Tb}}^{3+}$ moments reside on a network of corner-sharing tetrahedra. Unlike other geometrically frustrated systems, ${\mathrm{Tb}}_{2}{\mathrm{Ti}}_{2}{\mathrm{O}}_{7}$ remains paramagnetic down to $\ensuremath{\sim}0.07\mathrm{K}$, rather than ordering into a conventional N\'eel or spin-glass-like state, despite the fact that short-range antiferromagnetic correlations (AFC) develop at $\ensuremath{\sim}50\mathrm{K}$. At the first AFC wave vector, its low-lying, relatively flat magnetic excitation spectrum softens partially below 30 K.

TL;DR: In this article, a new test function is proposed to detect proximity to a static voltage collapse point based on a reduction of the load flow Jacobian with respect to the critical bus of a system.
Abstract: The paper proposes a new test function to be used in an existent performance index for detection of proximity to a static voltage collapse point. This test function is based on a reduction of the load flow Jacobian with respect to the critical bus of a system. The test function is compared with known singular values and eigenvalues indices, and with other previously proposed test functions. A thorough analysis of the similarities, advantages, and disadvantages of all these indices and test functions is presented. The techniques are tested and compared on the IEEE 300 bus test system, showing the effect of system characteristics and limits in these indices and functions.

TL;DR: High–resolution palaeolimnological data are presented, which show that increases in phytoplankton production developed from the 1930s onwards, which parallels human–population growth and agricultural activity in the Lake Victoria drainage basin.
Abstract: Lake Victoria, the largest tropical lake in the world, suffers from severe eutrophication and the probable extinction of up to half of its 500+ species of endemic cichlid fishes. The continuing degradation of Lake Victoria's ecological functions has serious long-term consequences for the ecosystem services it provides, and may threaten social welfare in the countries bordering its shores. Evaluation of recent ecological changes in the context of aquatic food-web alterations, catchment disturbance and natural ecosystem variability has been hampered by the scarcity of historical monitoring data. Here, we present high-resolution palaeolimnological data, which show that increases in phytoplankton production developed from the 1930s onwards, which parallels human-population growth and agricultural activity in the Lake Victoria drainage basin. Dominance of bloom-forming cyanobacteria since the late 1980s coincided with a relative decline in diatom growth, which can be attributed to the seasonal depletion of dissolved silica resulting from 50 years of enhanced diatom growth and burial. Eutrophication-induced loss of deep-water oxygen started in the early 1960s, and may have contributed to the 1980s collapse of indigenous fish stocks by eliminating suitable habitat for certain deep-water cichlids. Conservation of Lake Victoria as a functioning ecosystem is contingent upon large-scale implementation of improved land-use practices.

TL;DR: A light-weight nanoporous graphitic carbon nitride (high-surface-area g-C3N4) that enables a sulfur electrode with an ultralow long-term capacity fade rate of 0.04% per cycle over 1500 cycles at a practical C/2 rate is reported on.
Abstract: Lithium-sulfur batteries are attractive electrochemical energy storage systems due to their high theoretical energy density and very high natural abundance of sulfur. However, practically, Li-S batteries suffer from short cycling life and low sulfur utilization, particularly in the case of high-sulfur-loaded cathodes. Here, we report on a light-weight nanoporous graphitic carbon nitride (high-surface-area g-C3N4) that enables a sulfur electrode with an ultralow long-term capacity fade rate of 0.04% per cycle over 1500 cycles at a practical C/2 rate. More importantly, it exhibits good high-sulfur-loading areal capacity (up to 3.5 mAh cm(-2)) with stable cell performance. We demonstrate the strong chemical interaction of g-C3N4 with polysulfides using a combination of spectroscopic experimental studies and first-principles calculations. The 53.5% concentration of accessible pyridinic nitrogen polysulfide adsorption sites is shown to be key for the greatly improved cycling performance compared to that of N-doped carbons.
