Dimensions of perfectionism and suicide ideation

Abstract: Two studies were conducted to examine the relation between dimensions of perfectionsim and suicide ideation: whether perfectionism is important in suicide ideation when considered in the context of other predictors of suicide (i.e., depression, hopelessness), and whether perfectionism moderates the association between life stress and suicide ideation. Samples of 91 psychiatric patients (Study 1) and 160 college students (Study 2) completed the Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale, the Hopelessness Scale, the Beck Depression Inventory, and the Scale For Suicide Ideation. The subjects in Study 2 also completed a measure of negative life stress. Overall, the results confirmed that self-oriented and socially prescribed perfectionism are associated with greater suicide ideation. Moreover, these two perfectionism dimensions contributed uniquely to the discrimination of suicide groups and both moderated the link between life stress and suicide ideation. The findings are discussed in terms of their practical and theoretical implications.

How Do Parents Support Preschoolers’ Numeracy Learning Experiences at Home?

Abstract: This study described the kinds of early numeracy experiences that parents provide for their preschoolers, and determined the extent to which parental experiences and involvement in home activities enhanced preschoolers’ numeracy knowledge. Twenty-five parents completed a home activity questionnaire, a 2-week diary study, and a videotaped play session where they were asked to draw out numerical content. Preschoolers’ numeracy scores were predicted by: (1) parental reports of positive personal experiences with mathematics and (2) involvement in activities with complex (versus basic) numeracy goals. Parents felt that most activities had important or essential mathematical value, but focused on number sense goals. Finally, parents who reportedly spent more time on numeracy tasks received high quality interaction ratings in the videotaped sessions; but these variables did not predict numeracy scores. The findings are discussed in terms of educating parents about incorporating numeracy concepts.

Performance of a beacon enabled IEEE 802.15.4 cluster with downlink and uplink traffic

Abstract: The performance of an IEEE 802.15.4 compliant network operating in the beacon enabled mode with both downlink and uplink traffic is analyzed through discrete time Markov chains and the theory of M/G/1 queues. The model considers acknowledged transmissions and includes the impact of different network and traffic parameters such as the packet arrival rate, packet size, inactive period between the beacons, and the number of stations. We investigate the nonsaturation region and outline the conditions under which the network abruptly goes to saturation. The analysis of stability of the network queues shows that the stability of the downlink queue at the coordinator is the most critical for network operation. Due to the abruptness with which the switch from nonsaturation to saturation occurs, the network operating point has to be carefully chosen according to the volume of downlink traffic. Furthermore, our model shows that certain features prescribed by the standard actually limit the performance of 802.15.4 networks.

Factors Associated with Distress Following the Breakup of a Close Relationship

Abstract: The purpose of this investigation was to identify the factors associated with the distress experienced after the breakup of a romantic relationship, both at the time of the breakup (assessed retrospectively) and at the time the questionnaire was completed. Four categories of variables were examined as possible correlates of post-breakup distress: variables associated with the initiation of the relationship, characteristics of the relationship while it was intact, conditions at the time of the breakup and individual difference variables. The sample consisted of 257 young adults (primarily college students; 83 male and 174 female) who had experienced a recent breakup (M = 21 weeks since breakup). The variables most highly associated with distress at the time of the breakup were non-mutuality in alternatives (i.e. partner having more inter-est in alternatives), commitment, satisfaction, greater effort in relationship initiation, being `left' by the other and fearful attachment style.
