TL;DR: Lower functioning and a history of psychiatric hospital stays were the most important predictors of higher costs and programs are needed to reorient this spending toward more effectively preventing homelessness and toward meeting the health, housing and social service needs of homeless people.
Abstract: Background Limited evidence on the costs of homelessness in Canada is available. We estimated the average annual costs, in total and by cost category, that homeless people with mental illness engender from the perspective of society. We also identified individual characteristics associated with higher costs. Methods As part of the At Home/Chez Soi trial of Housing First for homeless people with mental illness, 990 participants were assigned to the usual-treatment (control) group in 5 Canadian cities (Vancouver, Winnipeg, Toronto, Montreal and Moncton) between October 2009 and June 2011. They were followed for up to 2 years. Questionnaires ascertained service use and income, and city-specific unit costs were estimated. We adjusted costs for site differences in sample characteristics. We used generalized linear models to identify individual-level characteristics associated with higher costs. Results Usable data were available for 937 participants (94.6%). Average annual costs (excluding medications) per person in Vancouver, Winnipeg, Toronto, Montreal and Moncton were $53 144 (95% confidence interval [CI] $46 297-$60 095), $45 565 (95% CI $41 039-$50 412), $58 972 (95% CI $52 237-$66 085), $56 406 (95% CI $50 654-$62 456) and $29 610 (95% CI $24 995-$34 480), respectively. Net costs ranged from $15 530 to $341 535. Distributions of costs across categories varied significantly across cities. Lower functioning and a history of psychiatric hospital stays were the most important predictors of higher costs. Interpretation Homeless people with mental illness generate very high costs for society. Programs are needed to reorient this spending toward more effectively preventing homelessness and toward meeting the health, housing and social service needs of homeless people.

TL;DR: A queueing analytical framework is presented to analyze the proposed scheme for queue-aware uplink bandwidth allocation in a subscriber station for polling services in IEEE 802.16 broadband wireless networks, and various QoS performance measures can be obtained.
Abstract: Although the medium access control (MAC) signaling has been well-defined in the IEEE 802.16 specifications, resource management and scheduling, which are crucial components to guarantee QoS performances, still remain as open issues. In this paper, we propose a scheme for queue-aware uplink bandwidth allocation in a subscriber station (SS) for polling services (real-time and non-real-time) in IEEE 802.16 broadband wireless networks. The proposed scheme adaptively allocates bandwidth in order to control queue length at a target level so that the requirements for delay and PDU dropping probability can be met. We present a queueing analytical framework to analyze the proposed scheme from which various QoS performance measures can be obtained. The proposed analytical model is validated by simulations and typical numerical results are presented

TL;DR: In this article, the authors describe the features and characteristics of a 3-year involvement of SportPsych consulting in professional hockey from 1987 to 1990, focusing on a 2-year development program with the Chicago Blackhawks.
Abstract: This article describes the features and characteristics of a 3-year involvement of SportPsych consulting in professional hockey from 1987 to 1990. Primarily discussion revolves around a 2-year development program with the Chicago Blackhawks. The components of an educational interdisciplinary philosophy of mental skills development and application are outlined and some of the challenges involved in professional team sport are discussed. The range of services described includes involvement in training camp, game preparation, individual development, subgroup work, team meetings, staff development, family support, minor pro development, playoffs, off-season programming, and scouting. The importance of a primary responsibility to players is pointed out, along with some of the advantages and disadvantages of a part-time role. Discussion covers some of the challenges faced and the potential effectiveness of various interventions and services.

TL;DR: In this article, the same authors found that flocculent surface sediment was 10 times higher in the surface sediment than in the underlying sandy sediment, accounting for 17 vs. 5% of the total respiration, and that almost all of the dissolved oxygen in the overlying water was consumed as it diffused through 5-7 mm of the surface material.
Abstract: Parts of the sandy littoral sediment of a Precambrian shield lake (Lake 302s) were intermittently covered with a layer of flocculent organic-rich material l-20 mm thick. Sandy sediments with flocculent surface sediment had higher rates of respiration (31-105%) and photosynthesis (37224%) than those without. Densities of invertebrate macrofauna were 10 times higher in the flocculent surface sediment than in the underlying sandy sediment, accounting for 17 vs. 5% of the total respiration, Microprofiles of oxygen concentration showed that almost all of the dissolved oxygen in the overlying water was consumed as it diffused through 5-7 mm of the flocculent surface sediment, so that the underlying sandy sediment was almost completely anaerobic in the presence of flocculent surface material. The presence of flocculent surface sediment also decreased the depth of penetration of sulfate into the sandy sediment since the zone of sulfate reduction was located closer to the sediment-water interface. In this experimentally acidified lake, neutralization of H,SO, via sulfate reduction was more rapid (2.04 x 10-l mmol H+ m-2 d-l) in the presence of surface flocculent sediment than in its absence (1.57 x 10-l mmol H+ m-2 d-l).
