First muon-neutrino disappearance study with an off-axis beam

Abstract: We report a measurement of muon-neutrino disappearance in the T2K experiment. The 295-km muon-neutrino beam from Tokai to Kamioka is the first implementation of the off-axis technique in a long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment. With data corresponding to 1.43 x 10(20) protons on target, we observe 31 fully-contained single mu-like ring events in Super-Kamiokande, compared with an expectation of 104 +/- 14 (syst) events without neutrino oscillations. The best-fit point for two-flavor nu(mu) -> nu(tau) oscillations is sin(2)(2 theta(23)) = 0.98 and vertical bar Delta m(32)(2)vertical bar = 2.65 x 10(-3) eV(2). The boundary of the 90% confidence region includes the points sin(2)(2 theta(23)), vertical bar Delta m(32)(2)vertical bar = (1.0, 3.1 x 10(-3) eV(2)), (0.84, 2.65 x 10(-3) eV(2)) and (1.0, 2.2 x 10(-3) eV(2)).

Characterization of urban commuter driving profiles to optimize battery size in light-duty plug-in electric vehicles

Abstract: Electrification of light duty vehicles using plug-in electric vehicles in conjunction with new generation of renewable energy to match the new electrical load addresses global concerns of greenhouse gas emissions and is being considered as a way to reduce environmental damage from the transportation sector. A database was gathered over a year from a fleet of 76 vehicles in Winnipeg, Canada and is used to develop a daily driving profile approximating actual driving power demand and parking times for charging these vehicles. The data are utilized to construct a commuter driving cycle based on the parameters defining functionality of a light duty vehicle. The cycle is then used in an energy-based simulation to optimize battery size for a commuter sedan car. Overnight only versus overnight and day charging scenarios are then compared. It is found that the battery storage size can be decreased by up to 40% without loss of functionality with a 2.4 h daily charge.

Effects of a Mental Training Package on an Endurance Performance

Abstract: This study aimed to examine the effects of a mental training package on the performance of a 1600-m run. Participants were 3 male triathletes and 1 male elite runner. A single-subject multiple baseline across individuals design was employed to evaluate the treatment package. Results demonstrated that the mental training package was effective in improving the running performance of the three participants who received intervention. Social validation results were favorable and indicated that participants enjoyed using the mental training package and were pleased with the results. Further, coaches felt that the results were important, especially those for the elite track athlete.
