Abstract: Leaf removal is known to enhance light exposure of clusters and therefore may affect grape composition. Owing to the risk of decreasing grape quality or sunburn as a consequence of improper sun exposure, it is crucial to determine the optimum leaf removal techniques adequate for the particular climate conditions of a vineyard area. Defoliation experiments on vine cv. Regent were conducted in two consecutive years (2014 and 2015). The effect of leaf removal treatment on the qualitative and quantitative composition of the polyphenol compounds in the grapes, with reference to the basic weather conditions of the vineyard area, located in Szczecin in the North-Western part of Poland, was assessed. Defoliation was performed manually in the cluster zone at three phenological plant stages: pre-flowering, berry-set and veraison. Leaf removal, especially early defoliation (pre-flowering), enhanced total polyphenol content, including the amount of anthocyanins, flavonols and flavan-3-ols and furthermore, it increased the amount of soluble solids, decreasing the titratable acidity in grapes. On the other hand, the treatments had a reducing impact on the phenolic acids in berries. Abstract: Epidemiological and experimental studies underline the role of magnesium in inflammation. Several data indicate an enhanced response of phagocytes (granulocytes, macrophages) derived from magnesium-deficient animals or cultured under low magnesium conditions to the inflammatory mediators' stimulation. On the contrary, it was pointed out that high extracellular Mg2+ concentration might partially attenuate the activation of phagocyte leukocytes. Thus, it is likely that magnesium-deficient conditions lead to the priming (pre-activation) of phagocytic cells. Magnesium status is an important modulator of the phagocyte response to immune stimuli and consequently could be implicated in a wide range of pathophysiological issues, e.g. those related to the production of radical oxygen species (ROS). It is likely that magnesium directly modulates phagocyte priming by its calcium antagonism and indirectly by its effect on the immunoinflammatory processes, the source of the priming mediators.

Abstract: Research on the operation of territorial governance and rural development programmes is dominated by qualitative methodologies, paying little attention heretofore to the characteristics and structures of new horizontal and vertical relationship formations that are the explicit objective of the governance and rural development model. Seeking to address this deficit in the literature, this article adds to a small number of existing contributions that use social network analysis (SNA) to examine the role of inter-organizational networks in shaping geographic functional regions in the context of governance. Rooted in the methodological perspective of SNA, the analysis focuses on relations between local actors participating in three area-based rural partnerships in Poland, which are conceptualized as territorially embedded institutional network clusters. The structure of inter-sectoral relations, understood as interactions (competition, conflict, coordination, cooperation, and control) and flows (information, financial, human, or tangible resources), between the institutional partners of these partnerships is examined. Analysing in detail attributes of network relations, the article identifies structural characteristics of the area-based partnerships, such as manifestations of how diverse local resources are engaged and how dominance by traditional powerful stakeholders can be overcome by network structures. Structural dynamics and transformations that represent expressions and manifestations of how territorially embedded governance networks are expected to operate are important areas of inquiry in political geography. In this context, the particular empirical and theoretical capacity of SNA is illuminated in this article as part of a broader presentation of primary field data on how network governance and rural development is taking shape in Central and Eastern Europe.
