Abstract
Advances in theory and algorithms for electronic structure calculations must be incorporated into program packages to enable them to become routinely used by the broader chemical community. This work reviews advances made over the past five years or so that constitute the major improvements contained in a new release of the Q-Chem quantum chemistry package, together with illustrative timings and applications. Specific developments discussed include fast methods for density functional theory calculations, linear scaling evaluation of energies, NMR chemical shifts and electric properties, fast auxiliary basis function methods for correlated energies and gradients, equation-of-motion coupled cluster methods for ground and excited states, geminal wavefunctions, embedding methods and techniques for exploring potential energy surfaces.

Entanglement entropy of electronic excitations.

TL;DR: An important implication is that in the case of entanglement it is not possible to gain a complete description of the state character from the orbitals alone, but more specific analysis methods are required to decode the mutual information between the electron and hole.

Linear Scaling Hierarchical Integration Scheme for the Exchange-Correlation Term in Molecular and Periodic Systems.

TL;DR: An adaptive numerical integration scheme for efficient evaluation of the exchange-correlation term using localized basis functions and atom-centered grids is presented and demonstrates consistent accuracy and efficiency across molecular and periodic systems.

A multi-state fragment charge difference approach for diabatic states in electron transfer: extension and automation.

TL;DR: This work generalizes the 3-state scheme for a multi- state FCD without the need of manual pick or assignment for the states, and finds that the multi-state approach yields much better charge-localized states in these systems.

Exploring the Role of the Third Active Site Metal Ion in DNA Polymerase η with QM/MM Free Energy Simulations

TL;DR: The simulations with three metal ions in the active site suggest that the third metal ion may play a catalytic role through electrostatic interactions with the leaving group, making the phosphoryl transfer reaction more thermodynamically favorable with a lower free energy barrier relative to the activated state corresponding to the deprotonated 3'OH nucleophile.

The effect of microhydration on ionization energies of thymine

TL;DR: A combined theoretical and experimental study of the effect of microhydration on ionization energies (IEs) of thymine is presented and the Franck-Condon factors for the 0 <-- 0 transitions are very small shifting the apparent PIE onsets to higher energies.

Density‐functional thermochemistry. III. The role of exact exchange

TL;DR: In this article, a semi-empirical exchange correlation functional with local spin density, gradient, and exact exchange terms was proposed. But this functional performed significantly better than previous functionals with gradient corrections only, and fits experimental atomization energies with an impressively small average absolute deviation of 2.4 kcal/mol.

Gaussian basis sets for use in correlated molecular calculations. I. The atoms boron through neon and hydrogen

TL;DR: In this paper, a detailed study of correlation effects in the oxygen atom was conducted, and it was shown that primitive basis sets of primitive Gaussian functions effectively and efficiently describe correlation effects.

General atomic and molecular electronic structure system

TL;DR: A description of the ab initio quantum chemistry package GAMESS, which can be treated with wave functions ranging from the simplest closed‐shell case up to a general MCSCF case, permitting calculations at the necessary level of sophistication.
