Adaptive radiation and hybridization in Wallace's Dreamponds: evidence from sailfin silversides in the Malili Lakes of Sulawesi

TL;DR: It is shown that introgressive hybridization is a prominent phenomenon in the radiation of sailfin silversides inhabiting the ancient Malili Lakes of Sulawesi, correlating conspicuously with patterns of increased diversity.
Journal ArticleDOI

Determinants of diversity in higher taxonomic categories

James W. Valentine
- 01 Oct 1980 -
TL;DR: It is often assumed that, if a few species are introduced into a relatively empty environment, the subsequent diversification will take the form of a logistic growth curve, rising to an equilibrium level of species richness, although there are no well-defined theoretical bases for this resemblance.
Journal ArticleDOI

Reproductive isolation among species of the genus Apis

TL;DR: In this article, the authors discuss the behavioural mating barriers (mating season, mating place, sexual signals, daily mating periods), copulatory barriers (size, genitalia, mating sign) and physiological barriers (sperm transfer, sperm storage) and postzygotic barriers (fertilisation, development, hybrids).

Diversification of carnivorous parasitic insects: extraordinary radiation or specialized dead end?

TL;DR: In this article, the authors cataloged the origins and effect on diversification of animal parasitism by insects of 15 carnivorous parasitic insect clades with estimated relationships, and found no evidence for ascribing either this difference or the heterogeneity of rates among carnivorous parasite clades to clade age, mode of parasitism, diversity of host clade, or host specificity.
