Abstract
The toxicity of ammonia to fishes has been attributed to the un-ionized ammonia chemical species present in aqueous solution Because the percent of total ammonia present as un-ionized ammonia (NH3) is so dependent upon pH and temperature, an exact understanding of the aqueous ammonia equilibrium is important for toxicity studies A critical evaluation of the literature data on the ammonia–water equilibrium system has been carried out Results of calculations of values of pKa at different temperatures and of percent of NH3 in aqueous ammonia solutions of zero salinity as a function of pH and temperature are presented

Effects of high ammonia concentrations on three cyprinid fish: Acute and whole-ecosystem chronic tests.

TL;DR: The pond results suggest that fish might be more tolerant to high ammonia concentrations in natural aquatic ecosystems than under laboratory conditions, and that the existing regulatory limits for reactive nitrogen (NH3) established from lab toxicity tests might be somewhat too high at the ecosystem conditions.

Molecular and physiological responses to long-term sublethal ammonia exposure in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar)

TL;DR: Atlantic salmon parr adapts to the long-term sublethal ammonia concentrations with increased branchial transcription levels of ammonia and urea transporting proteins and ammonia detoxification in the brain, and results suggest that Gln synthesis is an ammonia detoxifying strategy employed in thebrain of Atlantic Salmon parr during long- term sub lethal ammonia exposure.

Marine ammonification and carbonic anhydrase activity induce rapid calcium carbonate precipitation

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors demonstrate microbial carbonate precipitation as a direct result of the interplay between the microbial nitrogen cycle and a microbially produced enzyme, showing that ammonification, due to intense microbial organic matter degradation, and carbonic anhydrase may play a substantial role for calcite precipitation in paleo-and shallow marine environments.
