TLDR
In this article, it was shown that despite the van der Waals' forces being capable of increasing the elastic contact area between the ball and the plane, the force that is required to overcome the molecular forces arising when the contact is broken does not increase thereby.

Adhesion and deformation properties of clean and characterized metal micro-contacts

Pashley, +1 more
- 01 Oct 1981 -
TL;DR: In this article, the adhesion and deformation properties of metal contacts were studied in a magnetic scanning electron microscope, incorporating an Auger facility for surface characterization, and it was shown that the loading-unloading cycle is highly irreversible, the junction finally separating in a ductile manner.

Interfacial Properties and Mechanisms Dominating Gas Hydrate Cohesion and Adhesion in Liquid and Vapor Hydrocarbon Phases.

TL;DR: The surface free energy of a hydrate particle was calculated and found to dominate the changes in the interaction forces with different continuous bulk phases and a model adapted from the capillary liquid bridge equation has been used to predict the particle-particle cohesive force as a function of contact time.

Controlled translational manipulation of small latex spheres by dynamic force microscopy

TL;DR: In this article, a home-built scanning force microscope was used for translation and in-plane rotation of nanometer-sized latex spheres by dynamic surface modification (DSM) based on the increment of the amplitude of the oscillating voltage applied at the dither piezo.

Deformation and Adhesion of Elastomer Microparticles Evaluated by AFM

TL;DR: An atomic force microscope was used to investigate the adhesion behavior of a viscoelastic particle of micron size on a mica plate in water, by attaching a particle of polydiethylhexyacrylate on the plate.

On the modified Tabor parameter for the JKR-DMT transition in the presence of a liquid meniscus.

TL;DR: In the present work, the Kelvin equation linking the Kelvin radius and the relative humidity was explicitly included in the modified Tabor parameter, which provided a quantitative description of the JKR-DMT transition in terms of the Relative humidity.

The London—van der Waals attraction between spherical particles

TL;DR: In this article, the London-v.d. interaction between two spherical particles is computed as a function of the diameters and the distance separating them, and a table is calculated which enables numerical application of the formulae derived.

LXXIX. The cohesive force between solid surfaces and the surface energy of solids

TL;DR: In this paper, an expression for the cohesive force between two unequal spheres in geometrical contact is derived and the surface energy of the solid may be computed from the constant in this expression.
