TLDR
In this article, it was shown that despite the van der Waals' forces being capable of increasing the elastic contact area between the ball and the plane, the force that is required to overcome the molecular forces arising when the contact is broken does not increase thereby.

Impact of thermal maturation on nano-scale elastic properties of organic matter in shales

TL;DR: In this article, a non-destructive atomic force microscopy technique was used to map the elastic modulus of organic and inorganic components at the nanometer scale in shales containing Type II kerogen from three different levels of thermal maturation.

Elastic Flattening and Particle Adhesion

TL;DR: The effect of elastic flattening on particle adhesion to solid surfaces has been investigated in this article, where the attracting and repulsing molecular potential energies and forces are obtained for a flattened sphere-surface system at first.

Comparison of various adhesion contact theories and the influence of dimensionless load parameter

TL;DR: In this paper, three models, JKR (Johnson, Kendall and Roberts), DMT (Derjaguin, Muller, and Toporov) and MD (Maugis-Dugdale), are compared with the Hertz model in dealing with nano-contact problems.

The London—van der Waals attraction between spherical particles

TL;DR: In this article, the London-v.d. interaction between two spherical particles is computed as a function of the diameters and the distance separating them, and a table is calculated which enables numerical application of the formulae derived.

LXXIX. The cohesive force between solid surfaces and the surface energy of solids

TL;DR: In this paper, an expression for the cohesive force between two unequal spheres in geometrical contact is derived and the surface energy of the solid may be computed from the constant in this expression.
