TLDR
In this article, it was shown that despite the van der Waals' forces being capable of increasing the elastic contact area between the ball and the plane, the force that is required to overcome the molecular forces arising when the contact is broken does not increase thereby.

Pseudoelastic deformation during nanoscale adhesive contact formation.

TL;DR: Molecular dynamics simulations are employed to demonstrate that adhesive contact formation through classical jump to contact is mediated by extensive dislocation activity in metallic nanoparticles, which is pseudoelastic, rather than purely elastic or plastic.

Origin of adhesion in humid air.

TL;DR: The origin of adhesion in humid air was investigated by pull-off force measurements between nanoscale contacts using atomic force microscopes in controlled environments from ultrahigh vacuum through various humidity conditions to water.

Two-dimensional model of vesicle adhesion on curved substrates

TL;DR: It is shown that both the force– displacement relationship and the maximum force at pull-off are significantly dependent on the substrate shape, suggesting that probes with different tip shapes may be designed for cell manipulation.

How properties of interacting depletant particles control aggregation of hard-sphere colloids

TL;DR: In this article, a numerical study of the effective potential Veff between two hard-sphere colloids dispersed in an implicit solvent in the presence of interacting depletant particles is presented.

Effect of work of adhesion on contact of a pressurized blister with a flat surface

TL;DR: In this paper, the axisymmetric deflection of a circular thin film (or blister) pressurized on one side and coming into contact with a flat surface is considered, and the effect of the work of adhesion on the contact radius is determined.

Theory of elasticity

TL;DR: The theory of the slipline field is used in this article to solve the problem of stable and non-stressed problems in plane strains in a plane-strain scenario.

The London—van der Waals attraction between spherical particles

TL;DR: In this article, the London-v.d. interaction between two spherical particles is computed as a function of the diameters and the distance separating them, and a table is calculated which enables numerical application of the formulae derived.

Untersuchungen über die Reibung und Adhäsion, IV

LXXIX. The cohesive force between solid surfaces and the surface energy of solids

TL;DR: In this paper, an expression for the cohesive force between two unequal spheres in geometrical contact is derived and the surface energy of the solid may be computed from the constant in this expression.
