TLDR
In this article, it was shown that despite the van der Waals' forces being capable of increasing the elastic contact area between the ball and the plane, the force that is required to overcome the molecular forces arising when the contact is broken does not increase thereby.

Capillary Adhesion Between Elastically Hard Rough Surfaces

TL;DR: In this paper, the adhesion versus vapor pressure (p/p676 s) trend between two elastically hard rough surfaces is modeled and compared with experimental results, and a more general approach allowing an arbitrary height distribution of Hertzian asperities subject to capillary forces is justified and developed.

Non-direct estimations of adhesive and elastic properties of materials by depth-sensing indentation

TL;DR: In this article, a non-direct determination of adhesive and elastic properties of contacting materials is proposed based on the connection between depth-sensing indentation by spherical indenters and mechanics of adhesive contact.
Journal ArticleDOI

Adhesion‐induced deformations of polymeric substrates: Particle size dependence of the contact area

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors measured the diameters of the contact areas from the micrographs and found that the contact radius varied as the particle radius raised to the 0.75±0.05 power.

Exploring the significance of structural hierarchy in material systems—A review

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors identify the major characteristics that manifest, or are resulted from, such hierarchy and heterogeneity in materials, and present several typical natural material systems including wood, bone, and others from animals to illustrate the proposed views.
Journal ArticleDOI

A predictive analytical friction model from basic theories of interfaces, contacts and dislocations

TL;DR: In this paper, a model that unifies elements of dislocation drag, contact mechanics, and interface theory is described, and strong arguments for agreement with friction dependence on temperature, velocity, orientation, and more general materials selection effects are presented.

Theory of elasticity

TL;DR: The theory of the slipline field is used in this article to solve the problem of stable and non-stressed problems in plane strains in a plane-strain scenario.

The London—van der Waals attraction between spherical particles

TL;DR: In this article, the London-v.d. interaction between two spherical particles is computed as a function of the diameters and the distance separating them, and a table is calculated which enables numerical application of the formulae derived.

LXXIX. The cohesive force between solid surfaces and the surface energy of solids

TL;DR: In this paper, an expression for the cohesive force between two unequal spheres in geometrical contact is derived and the surface energy of the solid may be computed from the constant in this expression.
