Ions in water: characterizing the forces that control chemical processes and biological structure.

TLDR
Two different techniques indicate that the interaction of water with anions is by an approximately linear hydrogen bond, suggesting that the dominant forces on ions in water are short range forces of a chemical nature.

Directional nature of hydrophobic interactions: Implications for the mechanism of molecular recognition

TL;DR: In this article, a hydrophobic-interaction-driven model is proposed to understand the specificity and affinity of molecular recognition in water, and the potential of mean force from molecular dynamics simulations is calculated.

Improved isoelectric focusing chromatography on strong anion exchange media via a new model that custom designs mobile phases using simple buffers.

TL;DR: A new model described here that combines multiple‐chemical and adsorption‐equilibria theory to enable in silico tailoring of elution pH profiles using mixtures of these simple buffers is shown to provide a versatile platform for optimizing and conducting ICF of protein mixtures on strong anion exchange media.

Dynamics of Hydration of Alkylsulfonate Anions in Aqueous Solutions

TL;DR: The 17O-NMR spin-lattice relaxation times (T1) of water molecules in aqueous solutions of n-alkylsulfonate (C1 to C6) and arylsulfonic anions were determined as a function of concentration at 298 K.

The Hofmeister effect and the behaviour of water at interfaces.

TL;DR: The first general, detailed qualitative molecular mechanism for the origins of ion-specific (Hofmeister) effects on the surface potential difference at an air-water interface is proposed; this mechanism suggests a simple model for the behaviour of water at all interfaces, regardless of whether the non-aqueous component is neutral or charged, polar or non-polar.
