Ions in water: characterizing the forces that control chemical processes and biological structure.

TLDR
Two different techniques indicate that the interaction of water with anions is by an approximately linear hydrogen bond, suggesting that the dominant forces on ions in water are short range forces of a chemical nature.

Ion flocculation in water: From bulk to nanoporous membrane desalination

TL;DR: In this article, molecular dynamics simulations of a mixture of 1:1 and 3:1 salts were used to explore the flocculation as a prominent factor in desalination through nanoporous membranes.

The Influence of Polymer and Ion Solvation on the Conformational Properties of Flexible Polyelectrolytes

TL;DR: This work investigates the influence of solvent affinity to counter-ions and the polyelectrolyte backbone on the conformational properties of highly charged flexible polymer chains using molecular dynamics simulations that include both ions and an explicit solvent.

Strategies to Optimize Biosensors Based on Impedance Spectroscopy to Detect Phytic Acid Using Layer-by-Layer Films

TL;DR: Impedance spectroscopy has been proven a powerful tool for reaching high sensitivity in sensor arrays made with nanostructured films in the so-called electronic tongue systems, but for optimized sensors and biosensors the dielectric relaxation processes involved in impedance measurements should also be considered.

Low concentrated hydroxyectoine solutions in presence of DPPC lipid bilayers: a computer simulation study.

TL;DR: In this paper, the influence of hydroxyectoine on the properties of the aqueous solution in presence of DPPC lipid bilayers was studied via semi-isotropic constant pressure (NPT) molecular dynamics simulations.

Effects of the Hofmeister series of sodium salts on the solvent properties of water.

TL;DR: It is demonstrated that the distances for all salts examined are interrelated with structural water entropies and static polarizabilities of anions and may be used as a measure of the relative effects of salts on precipitation of ferric oxide, excessive chemical potential of propanol in salt solutions, surface tension, and viscosity.

The Hofmeister effect and the behaviour of water at interfaces.

TL;DR: The first general, detailed qualitative molecular mechanism for the origins of ion-specific (Hofmeister) effects on the surface potential difference at an air-water interface is proposed; this mechanism suggests a simple model for the behaviour of water at all interfaces, regardless of whether the non-aqueous component is neutral or charged, polar or non-polar.
