Ions in water: characterizing the forces that control chemical processes and biological structure.

TLDR
Two different techniques indicate that the interaction of water with anions is by an approximately linear hydrogen bond, suggesting that the dominant forces on ions in water are short range forces of a chemical nature.

Revealing the Origin of the Specificity of Calcium and Sodium Cations Binding to Adsorption Monolayers of Two Anionic Surfactants.

TL;DR: This study conducts classical atomistic molecular dynamics simulations to compare the ion interactions with the adsorption layers of these two surfactants, formed at the vacuum-water interface and found that both surfactant behave similarly in the presence of Na+ ions.

The effect of hydration on the electronic structure and stability of the superalkali cation Li3

TL;DR: The interaction of the superalkali cation Li3+ with water molecules, as well as the structures and stability of the resulting water complexes are theoretically studied at the MP2/6-311++G(d,p) level.

Dilution thermodynamics of the biologically relevant cation mixtures

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present the experimental evidence that the dilution enthalpies of the biologically relevant ions depend on the presence of monovalent cations; i.e., sodium and potassium.

Comparison of the Microsolvation of CaX2 (X = F, Cl, Br, I) in Water: Size-Selected Anion Photoelectron Spectroscopy and Theoretical Calculations

TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated the micro-solvation of alkaline-earth dihalides in water and provided information about the dependence of solvation processes on different halides.
Journal ArticleDOI

Synergistic effect of amino-acids and metal salts as draw solutions to enhance the performance of fertilizer-drawn forward osmosis

TL;DR: In this paper, the osmotic properties of blended amino-acids and metal-salts fertilizer draw solutions were investigated, and their forward osmosis (FO) performances were investigated.

The Hofmeister effect and the behaviour of water at interfaces.

TL;DR: The first general, detailed qualitative molecular mechanism for the origins of ion-specific (Hofmeister) effects on the surface potential difference at an air-water interface is proposed; this mechanism suggests a simple model for the behaviour of water at all interfaces, regardless of whether the non-aqueous component is neutral or charged, polar or non-polar.
