In this paper, micro-probe analyses of natural igneous olivines from many rocks confirm that Ni increases and Mn de-decreases with increasing Mg content.
Abstract
Microprobe analyses of natural igneous olivines from many rocks confirm that Ni increases and Mn de-decreases with increasing Mg content. A strong crystal-chemical control is apparently not overridden by effects resulting from pressure-temperature variations during crystallization or from variations in bulk composition of the host magma. Calcium ranges from 0 to 1 wt percent and, although commonly increasing with Fe in zoned grains, does not correlate generally with major elements. However, most plutonic olivines have less than 0.10 percent and are separated almost completely from olivines from extrusive and hypabyssal rocks with over 0.10 percent Ca. Depth of crystallization appears to play a major role in determining Ca content, but the data provide no evidence for the correlation of Ca content with crystallization temperature anticipated from experimental work. Diffusion of minor elements in and out of olivine during slow cooling is demonstrated, but its effect on Ca content is uncertain. Some correlat...

Calcium exchange between olivine and clinopyroxene calibrated as a geothermobarometer for natural peridotites from 2 to 60 kb with applications

TL;DR: In this article, the equilibrium Ca content of olivine coexisting with clinopyroxene was experimentally determined in natural lherzolitic compositions (Mg/(Mg + Fe)ol ≈ 0.9).

The geochemistry of basalts from a back-arc spreading centre in the East Scotia Sea

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors show that the back-arc basalts can be derived from an essentially similar mantle source (with respect to these elements) through varying degrees of partial melting, but involving some residual clinopyroxene.

Petrology and Geochemistry of Boninites from the North Termination of the Tonga Trench: Constraints on the Generation Conditions of Primary High-Ca Boninite Magmas

TL;DR: A detailed mineralogical, geochemical, and experimental study of a high-Ca boninite suite from the northern termination of the Tonga trench was performed in this paper. Butterworth et al. reported that the primary melts were characterized by high MgO contents (22-24 wt.%) and were also characterized by a wide range of incompatible-element contents, e.g., (La/Yb)y varies from 05 to 16, whereas compatible major-element concentrations (A12O3, FeO, CaO, SiO2, and

Nickel content of basaltic magmas: identification of primary magmas and a measure of the degree of olivine fractionation

TL;DR: In this paper, the fractionation behavior of nickel in basaltic magma due to the crystallization of olivine has been calculated using constant NiMg and FeMg exchange partition coefficients.

Ultramafic inclusions in basaltic rocks from Hawaii

TL;DR: In this article, the inclusions were separated into three categories, which correlate with three groups basaltic hosts: lherzolite inclusions are relatively poor in Fe, and the component minerals have limited ranges of composition.

The role of olivine in the crystallization of the prehistoric Makaopuhi tholeiitic lava lake, Hawaii

TL;DR: In the case of the Makaopuhi lake, the olivine phenocrysts settled at an average rate of about 4 × 10−6 cm Sec−1 to form a zone that contains 21 percent olivines 75 feet above the base.

Basement Rocks and Structural Evolution of Southern Oklahoma

TL;DR: Basement rocks in the 17,000 square-mile region of southern Oklahoma crop out in the Wichita and Arbuckle Mountains and have been studied in subsurface samples f rom 175 wells as mentioned in this paper.
