Mobilization of heavy metals by newer, therapeutically useful chelating agents

TLDR
The Dimaval-mercury challenge test holds great promise as a diagnostic test for mercury exposure, especially for low level mercurialism.

Advances in metal-induced oxidative stress and human disease

Klaudia Jomová, +1 more
- 10 May 2011 -
TL;DR: An overview of redox and non-redox metal-induced formation of free radicals and the role of oxidative stress in toxic action of metals is provided.
Journal ArticleDOI

Mercury Toxicity and Treatment: A Review of the Literature

TL;DR: D diagnosis of mercury toxicity can be challenging but can be obtained with reasonable reliability and effective therapies for clinical toxicity have been described.

Can antioxidant be beneficial in the treatment of lead poisoning

H Gurer, +1 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the importance of using antioxidants in treating lead poisoning was discussed, and the possible protective effects of antioxidants in lead toxicity were investigated. But, the authors did not consider the effect of antioxidant supplementation following lead exposure.
Journal ArticleDOI

Can Antioxidants Be Beneficial in the Treatment of Lead Poisoning

TL;DR: Data suggest that antioxidants may play an important role in abating some hazards of lead, and that restoration of a cell's antioxidant capacity appears to provide a partial remedy.

Determination and metabolism of dithiol chelating agents. XVI: Pharmacokinetics of 2,3-dimercapto-1-propanesulfonate after intravenous administration to human volunteers.

TL;DR: The pharmacokinetics of 2,3-dimercaptopropane-1-sulfonate (DMPS), an effective chelating agent for mercury, were determined in five healthy adults after i.v. administration of 3.0 mg/kg of DMPS.

Reversible Nephrotoxic Reactions to a Combined 2,3-Dimercapto-1-propanol and Calcium Disodium Ethylenediaminetetraacetic Acid Regimen in Asymptomatic Children with Elevated Blood Lead Levels

TL;DR: It was concluded that 13% of children with plumbism who received chelation treatments developed mild transient biochemical evidence of nephrotoxicity and another 3% developed acute renal failure characterized by oliguria four to eight days after chelation treatment was discontinued.

Estimation of mercury burdens in rats by chelation with dimercaptopropane sulfonate

TL;DR: The increase in urinary excretion induced by DMPS was almost equal to the amount of mercury lost from the kidneys, directly proportional to the whole body burden of mercury at the time of dosing with DMPS in animals dosed with HgCl2 and exposed to mercury vapor.
