TLDR
A variable-number tandem-repeat (VNTR) typing assay for the differentiation of Mycobacterium abscessus strains was developed and showed complete reproducibility, locus stability, and a discriminatory power that is superior to that of multilocus sequencing.
Abstract
A variable-number tandem-repeat (VNTR) typing assay for the differentiation of Mycobacterium abscessus strains was developed. This assay showed complete reproducibility, locus stability, and a discriminatory power (Hunter-Gaston discriminatory index [HGDI] of 0.9563) that is superior to that of multilocus sequencing. It is a promising tool for the investigation of Mycobacterium abscessus epidemiology and nosocomial outbreaks.

Genomic reconnaissance of clinical isolates of emerging human pathogen Mycobacterium abscessus reveals high evolutionary potential.

TL;DR: The first comparative whole-genome study of Ma strains isolated from patients of wide geographical origin finds a high proportion of accessory strain-specific genes indicating an open, non-conservative pan- genome structure, and clear evidence of rapid phage-mediated evolution.

Inducible and Acquired Clarithromycin Resistance in the Mycobacterium abscessus Complex.

TL;DR: Most clinical isolates of M. abscessus complex had inducible resistance to clarithromycin and total absence of constitutive resistance, and the acquisition of resistance mutations in rrl gene was associated with functional and non-functional erm(41) gene.

TL;DR: A new algorithm for finding tandem repeats which works without the need to specify either the pattern or pattern size is presented and its ability to detect tandem repeats that have undergone extensive mutational change is demonstrated.

Numerical index of the discriminatory ability of typing systems: an application of Simpson's index of diversity.

TL;DR: An index of discrimination for typing methods is described, based on the probability of two unrelated strains being characterized as the same type, which may be used to compare typing methods and select the most discriminatory system.

Rapid identification of mycobacteria to the species level by polymerase chain reaction and restriction enzyme analysis.

TL;DR: A method for the rapid identification of mycobacteria to the species level was developed on the basis of evaluation by the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) of the gene encoding for the 65-kDa protein.
