Planar waveguides were made of chrysoidin-doped polyvinyl alcohol (or PVA) deposited onto glass substrates. An adaptation of the prism-film coupler method was designed to measure the modification of the modal properties at 633 nm induced by an intense illumination at 488 nm. Numerical simulations showed the equivalence between the difference of the effective indices of lower modes (m = 0,1) and the difference of the refractive index of the film within a certain range of waveguide and device physical properties. This result was used to evaluate the non-linearity of the polymer-organic dye films. The relation between the non-linearity and the absorption of the pump illumination was established and the temporal response was studied.

An Adaptation of the Prism-Film Coupler Method Used to Study PVA/Chrysoidin Non-Linear Waveguides

In the past several years, the enormous possibilities of the Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) technique for producing ordered supermolecular architectures, with extensive scientific and technological applications, have begun to be appreciated and in some cases demonstrated. In this paper, we review some key developments in the fabrication and utilization of LB films in the last decade or so; we also discuss in some detail various possible applications, particularly in electrical areas such as molecular electronic devices, electroluminescent light sources, and even high temperature excitonic superconductors. Recent LB work at Xerox Research Centre of Canada is described; this includes structural investigations of novel phthalocyanine monolayers and their application to the study of Surface Enhanced Raman Scattering, as well as fabrication of reaction center protein monolayers used to study charge transfer processes in photosynthesis.
